Arthur C. Clarke (my idol) once remarked that a mug's worth of zero point energy is enough to boil the world's oceans.

Ummm yeah lets harness an unlimited supply of energy, what happens when it backfires and opens a total rift letting zreo energy flowing directly into space nothing could stop it

Sucks to be you

Actually, a ship or facility utilizing Zero point energy cores would probably incorperate a a device on it that would channel all of the power expended by a failing core back into the singularity, therby sealing it.

though it would take the power of an exploding core to completly seal it, this device would work as a governer and as the core is run at higher and higher levels, more and more energy would be channeled back into keeping the rift closed.

ZPE is already in our space, it's the result of sub-Planck-scale quantum flux within our own universe.
