Zero point energy
If we know enough about the properties of space-time to be able to travel through subspace, then I think it would be reasonable to speculate that by this time we also know how to harness zero point energy. It would be much more convenient than fusion; since you're drawing energy directly from space, the supply is limitless. This also makes sense since the UD-8 Kayser uses collapsing wave-functions and so-fourth.
