Question about shields

I have a question about the handeling of shields in the first release.

Why havn't you just turned of the shields for the fighters in Fred2?

I dont't know the right word for what I want to say, so i describe it.
The thing where you can change how much energy goes to the systems.
Normally that would be shields, engines and weapons.
If you set the shields of then there are only engines and weapons left (like in Subspace or at the start of FS1).
You can do this (as you may guess) in menue editor --> shield systems.

And sorry for my horrible english!

I think they're there to protect you from ship to ship collisions.

I don't think shields protect you much from collisions.
Shields are there to protect you from shocwaves. Whitout them, your fighter would be shred apart quickly by shockwaves. The shields are however so weak that they have no serious effect on damage done by weapons fire. At least this is what some of the TBP team members keep telling. It's one of them gameplay balancing thingys. Flying without shields is actually great fun, often short lived fun, but fun.

We couldn't reduce the amount of damage caused by explosions and explosion shockwaves, that is why we decided to keep very weak and invisible shields on fighters.

Fighters does have ten points of shields, without shield mesh howewer. This amount is nowhere near to stop weapons fire, but it protects your ass from shockwaves well. So keep your "shields" recharging if you want to fly without additional harassment from explosions.

...mmmh...could have worked if we attached a special explosion tag to each ship...anyway, maybe the source code will help out in the future...

What Mr. Fury said is correct.

Anyone who has played Descent: FreeSpace in the missions before shields will know how painful it is when you get hit by a shockwave.

Heck, there were evenings:

"Freighter One is going down, stay away from the blast!"

Wink

In that mission in FS1 when you had to escort the Galetea though the asteroid field; at the end when the Shivan bombers warped in one of them launched a bomb. In my complete ignorance I tried shooting down, only to kill myself when it exploded.

I remember getting hit by the bomb just when I wasn't watching. Conclusion = Mission Failed *Nooo!!!*

And in FS1 it truly was important to keep your distance when you didn't have any shields in the early missions. Sometimes a blast from a fighter blasting was enough to take 50% of your ships health :/

Yeah shockwaves were bad enough and what about collisions? Three or four hits and BUM! Always remebered to keep distance to capital ships... In these days it is different even without shield so close to cap ship as possible...
