Peeks in...

Well, to comment on the Trek vs B5,
yes, Startrek ships are powerful, however, it is also 100% utter nonsence. there will *NEVER* be sheilds, and while yes, the weapons are the same POWER as B5 (With the exception of the torpedos, which, if true to science, would destroy the ship fireing it as well...)
I know a top guy in NASA/Mc Donnel Duglas, he watches B5, not Trek. apparently, NASA LIKES B5, why? because it's based on the real world.
that aside, Trek is OK, you just have to remind yourself, "this is just sci fi and will never happen"
B5 is Great, you can see "Gee, in five hundred years, I can see this happening for real!"

Oh man...
one thing about science... NEVER SAY NEVER.
Science is all about incertainty one theory true today can be revealed false tomorrow. Whats sci-fi today can be a fact tomorrow. Actualy Sci-fi has been and will always be the inspiration after wich dreams can become true (sometimes nightmares as well)
In 19th century everyone would agree that goin to the moon on top a multi-tonne rocket was inpossible and could never be achieved. Gess what? it became true after all those primitive Sci-fi Jules Vernne novels as well as numerous black and white sci-fi moovies.
shields?? pff big deal even todays tech I can picture a way to shield you agaings energy guns. Imagine a proton or a meson gun these are electricay charged particles beams. If you a fire a strong magnetic field pulse youll be able to deflect away the beam. In generation from now there will be for sure more sophisticated ways for this.

Recently some scientists were experimenting with something resembling a transporter (in its very very infant stages mind you). Something about quantum entanglement. This is the first time they were able to move something bigger than a single atom apparently (if I read it right).
So if the most implausable of Star Trek sciences is still something to be trifled with....so are so many of the other ones that aren't so implausable.
Heck, someone's already worked out equations for warp fields and whatnot.
Its not all bogus heresey. I think the most common complaint with Star Trek technology is that its just never consistent.

the warp field stuff yup it can work 2 and it would also act as the most impenatrable shield ever - it creates a space time bubble nothing can penetrate space time so you be isolated from the universe alos rendering you cloaked and all we need to achieve this is negative mass matter or a device that can create ag feild and bobs your uncles wapr drive shields and cloaking deive all in one =) better than trek whooooooo yah
the transporter things i read about this the other day and i cant see how it can be used as a transporter the article i was reading in new scientist implied it was more use for faster than light communication more than anything else

The transporter thing was done at my old haunting ground, the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews. I always wondered why so many people kept disappearing in that basement laboratory.....

hey i studied astrophysics at st andrews =)

You know Tim lister or Tracey Quine?
I studies Comp Sci but spent years eating Fisher and Donaldson fudge dougnuts from the Physics Common Room!
LOL

THe B5 ships could in thoery just jump to and from hyperspace multiple times through any Star Trek fleet and tear them apart in the process. (example: in A call To Arms The Victory and the Excalibur both destroy a group of Drahk Raiders in this manner.)

Oh ****! Those idiots did it.
My god... at this rate this thread will beat the record of 255 posts (Icefires debate about EA tech at endgame)
but whats incredible is that this debate makes no sense at all!!!!
I guess cheap talk is facion nowadays.

nah star trek sensors would detect the energy signature and be out of the area long before the point openedhard to hit something traveling at 50% of the speed of light hehe - sorry for reviving this everyone but i couldn't not resisit and like you i never spent enough time in lectures hehe

hmmmmm all evidence suggests b5 ships dont go even close to the speed of star trek ships - for example the thunderbolts carried by the excalibre are faster than it yet they have no inertia dampning which means 0.75c would leave a nasty sticky mess on the back of the ship b5 ships are slow compared star trek ships hehe the wonders of impulse drive =)
