Don't buy a brand name PC. Try and getting a barebones and building it from there. with the memory and motherboard in, it is easier. you can also find some of the best prices on OEM hardware on their. OEMs does not have tech support. also you can get a copy of XP pro for 160 i think. But anyway. Try and build your own system. It will give you a feeling of accomplishment. Also if you are a student you can get a copy of office XP standard for about $100.00
And don't buy Windows XP unless you want to be harassed by your operating system every time you try to do anything. (You would also need to go through it with a very fine comb to get rid of all the spyware and other surprises before letting it anywhere near a network connection.)

Well.. XP is better than 95, 98 or ME.. but 2K pro is probly the best.
And yes I'm aware that technically there are better OSs (Linux), but they're only better if you don't factor in the "complete incompatability with almost anything"

I use W2k, it is the best if you consider things even a little... It is a stable NT based system that doesn't try to sodomize it's users if they want to do something, no spyware (as long as you don't install SP3, or at least kill the two brand new spyware services it introduces before connecting to the net again) and it works great with games too.
