-- Goodbye (https://volitionwatch.game-warden.com/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=4704)
I'm almost afraid to admit this, but I've never played the Wing Commander series. I tried to get through WCI but it ran way too fast on my "powerful" Pentium 75. That was back in '95, BTW.
Could someone plese give me a really quick synopsis of what happens in WC 1-5? I'd really appreciate knowing the story behind the series.
WC1 :
The Terran Confederation is at war with a species called the "Kilrahi" , big humanoid tigers with advanced tech.
You are on a carrier called the Tiger's Claw , and you fight the furballs till you destroy the enemy's starbase in the last mission and conquer the Vega sector for the Terran Confederation.
Bonus:
A Kilrathi fleet tests a new weapon and destroys the Goddard Colony , You and the Tiger'S Claw pursue the enemy fleet and destroy it.
WC2 :
The Kilrathi invent a stealth fighter , leaving the ship invisible for radar and eyes. Those bombers destroy the Tiger's Claw while you and a few others are somewhere on Patrol. Meanwhile a rebellion arises on on of the planets of the Empire of Kilrah, its the one with the shipyards building the stealth bombers. To prevent that this technology falls into terran hands the Kilrathi Gov bombards the shipyards. The stealth technology get lost. You are blamed for the loss of the Tiger's Claw ( now that no more stealth fighters appear which are considered as non-existant ) are you are transferred to a distant sector by Admiral Tolwyn.
But that is where the Kilrathi attack ! You fight them off in a long campaign , destroying the enemy starbase at last. In the meantime you deal with a traitor whose brother was killed at Goddard and who seeks revenge.
WC3 : This is the rest of the Terran-Kilrathi war. It ends with the destruction of Kilrah. The Kilrathi Empire surrenders.
WC4 : Admiral Tolwyn has gone crazy. He attacks Confederation installations and ensures the border worlds are blamed for it. Like that he is provoking military actions against the borderworlds ( outer human colonies ) and he wants to start a war to realise HIS ideals of a new world. You and your friends defect to the borderworlds and fight of the terran agressors, finally you make your way to the Senate of the Confederation where you reveale the truth of the attacks. The Confederation finally stops the war against the border worlds and Admiral Tolwyn is sentenced to death pending charges of treason.
WC5 : An unknown alien race ( look like cockroaches ) randomly attacks Confedeation vessels in the Kilrathi territory. The Kilrathi who are not allowed to have ships bigger than corvette class struggle in the defense of their territory. The confederation mega-carrier TCS MIDWAY ( your ship ) deals with this new aggression.
These alien attacks are part of an old Kilrathi prophecy. The war against the humans just was the beginning. For the kilrathi , these aliens are death itself, they have come to purify the universe and to kill all life.
Combining their forces the Kilrathi and the Confederation fight back the aliens and finally destroy their gateway that allowed them to enter our universe. WC5 is pretty much like Babylon 5's THIRDSPACE movie. Well , basic idea.

The sun is quite warm,
the universe is fairly large
and I have a loose mouth.
Thanks for taking the time to fill me in, Skullar. Much appreciated.
Unfortunatly the creator of the series Chris roberts "defected" to microsoft (I can hear kazan now: down with bill gates!!!), after this the editor company of the WC games was never the same(Origin), this before wC: prophecy (not wc5).
when WC: prophecy came out you could see the radical difference in the game compared to when he was still at Origin.
I almost cryied !!!
the saga I loved so much.. gonne forever.
the new leader at origin some chinese born guy announced a new trilogy when WC prophecy came out, but his plans never came true and Origin began laying low, probably not to recover again. Its possibly going extint.
mean while Chris roberts is managing his subcontracted microsoft company (digital anvil) at the same time he directs a wing commander moovie for cinema. Had he the same funding as when he was at origin he could actualy make the moovie with half the quality as the cutscennes of hies games from 3 to 4.
WING COMMANDER: THE MOOVIE came out on the year 1998 but every one saw it as a series B sci-fi moovie, and it was an audience disaster.
If you look on the stores you can get lucky and find one exemplar of this moovie. Its not as good as B5's though, thanks to chris roberts short sighted personal ambitions

Uh, little off there Haderak.
A) Wing Commander the movie did very well, infact Chris Roberts was contracted shorthly therafter to make five more films, the first he is working on now. (I really like the film despite Freddie Prince Jr.)
B) At the time Origin made WC: Prophecy, roberts did not work on the film because he already had another project. Freelancer. This game, which has been in the works for four years and is slated for a summer 2001 release, features a non-linier, non-branching storyline, over three hundred missions, a fully dynamic universe and gameplay simmilar to Privateer, Elite, or Escape Velocity, but on a much grander scale, dozens of planets, all with cites and stations, hundreds of ships. THOUSANDS of players on one online server. It is both a Space Combat sim and a third person adventure game. Visit lancersreactor.com for more info.
C) Chris Roberts did not "defect to microsoft." Digital Anvil was independant untill very recently. When Microsoft bought them, and Freelancer, he left the project to his brother Erin Roberts, and began work on his second film.
BTW: Starlancer is the Alpha flight engine for Freelancer
I'd really like to play the WC series (1-5, at least) myself but the first several games are too old and would probably run too fast for even the quickest of human reflexes. No, I don't wanna hear your denials.
From what I've heard, the series had a lot of depth to it, particularly for space shooters. Unfortunately, all I got from my P75 was that humans were at war with a species that looked like my pet Hemingway all grown up and that even if I shot my own guys (the only kills I could ever make) I still never got arrested. The bar tender even said strait to my face that he'd like to "get his hands on the guy that killed Spirit", or something to that effect. Teeheehee....
Wing Commander started the Space Flight Combat simulation Genre with a bang, it is a universe that i have been suffereing withdrawl symptoms from for a long time - i have all 10 Games
(Here They go
Wing Commander 1 (unfortunantly i dont have SM1 and SM2)
Wing Commander 2 (W/ SO1 and SO2)
Wing Commander 3
Wing Commander 4
Wing Commander Prophecy [Erin Roberts - was kinda cool]
Wing Commander Academy
Wing Commander Armada (had IPX multiplayer.. oh did i ever own people - over 5000 human to human kills!)
Wing Commander Privateer (I WANT A WINDOWS/DIRECTX Version of Privateer with the entire universe map!!!!!)
Wing Commander Privater II [Erin Roberts - crappy as hell, not even to do with WC)

No. I have tried it but it didn't work because i donte have DOS on my comp. The game requiires Dos to run. Can i put DOS on my comp without partitioning the hard drive?
