Perhaps a bit heavy....but I REALLY like it.

When can we expect bump mapping like that in FS2?

THE WORD!

I really want to see our beloved FS2 like that...
*drools*

Come on coders! Show us what you are made of!
(0's and 1's of course )

Edit: Hey, this was mainly a joke. Priorities people... priorities...

It gives the illusion of a texture actually being 3d when infact its not. The Perseus' texture details up there make it look like its got far more 3d detail than it actually has.

You are NOT stupid. Asking something when you don't know is a proof of cleverness, in my opinion. So, as a reward, here is the answer:

As Icefire said, it is meant to be an optical illusion. It simulates light incidence on parts of the 3D mesh, in this case our beloved Perseus. Basically, you can avoid modeling those tiny parts using bump mapping.

Imagine a polygonal square-shaped plane that you want to make look like, let's say, an assemblement of hull plates. You have two options: (Follow link)
http://www.geocities.com/purelardons/Bump.html?1019873393670
-Either you split and extrude your polygonal face to obtain the result, as shown in exemple 1, but you will use more calculating resources...

-Or you simply map a texture that will simulate the shape by acting as a lighting information, as shown in exemple 2. In this case, white color value is UP, black color value is DOWN. Grey values make transitions. This way you do not need to add polygons to your mesh, and thus save resources.

And, Psycho... Veeeeeeeeeery nice!!!

I don't think you actually know what the word "clever" means. Do you also think it's clever to eat when you're hungry and sleep when you're tired?

Sorry about that. I thought I knew what "clever" meant. Obviously I was wrong.

Oh, well, I'm just one more french trying to get some english notions, I guess... But was there any agressivity in your reply?
