post-PXO Freespace2 multiplayer
Q: since the demise of PXO, what could a desperated FS2 pilot looking for a multi game possibly do?
A: forget the idea of retail FS2/PXO/multi completely, instead, install the Freespace Open a la FSSCP and use it's multi capabilities
How?
1. having the FS2 retail installed already, download and install the results of the Freespace Source Code Project, FreeSpace Open:

2. remove the "mv_speffects.vp" from the FS2 install folder; this could give you advanced graphics, but in multi it'll also give you the sinister "hacked tables/data" warning
3. get the multiplayer config file from here and copy it to the /data folder in FS install directory (remember to remove the ".fs2" extension from the file name) :

4. register a FSO multiplayer account here:

5. start the launcher and click on the "browse" button on top right hand side, pick "fs2_open_3_6.exe" (if that is the version you DL'ed) from the list
6. Run the game, go to the multiplayer settings and assign the user/password in the "PXO" setup (as you specified when you registered your account at step4.)
7. (optional) monitor & post on this thread to stay/keep others informed on active hosts:

8. join/host, fly, enjoy - nm the occasional crash, its part of the drill 
(all URLs lead to FSO related threads at HLP forums)
At this time there is no lobby, so it takes you straight to the list of running games/hosts (less chatter, more flight time  ).
On a very positive note, this time there's no Vali Hell (TM) at all! 
(I hope the SCP experts around here will correct me for possible factual errors etc.)
