Lightbulb save hard drive space

Let me get this straight........

(vp) files are just compressed versions of the files that are in the data folder.

The game itself reads from the data folder first, then if it doesn't find what it is looking for in there then it will read from the (vp) files.

Am I right so far?

So if I wanted to save hard drive space could I delete either the (vp) files or the data folder and still run the game bug-free?

If you're running a clean install of FS2 (no mods,) your data folders (except for Players and Freddocs) should be empty anyway. Look and see.

Yep. If you downloaded FS2 from HotU you`ll have lots of files in the data drawer (for voice etc). If you`ve managed to find the .vp files you don`t need these files any more. It's probably a better idea to delete the files rather than deleting your entire data drawer (or even deleting the sub-directories). Instead just open each drawer and delete all the files inside.

Just don`t accidently delete your player files or you`ll have to play through the campaign again.

Nope...

Didn't work.....

The game just doesn't like it when you remove its files.
I went into the data directory, and just deleted the files inside the folders, not the folders themselves..........CTD

I then thought maybe just the (vssver.scc) files had to be in their respective folders. Don't ask why I thought this, I just did......CTD

So I then restored the whole data directory back to its 584Mb brilliance and tried eliminating some of the (vp) files.........CTD

Oh well, My freespace folder is 1.15GB. That wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have a dinosaur for a computer, but I'm talking about a 6GB hard drive here.

Don't you think it's time for an upgrade....

For the record, I'm not sure if I'd call the vp files compressed either. They shrink down a fair amount when compressed with WinZip. If I get around to it I'll try some other formats like ARJ, LHA, ACE and RAR to see if they can shrink them any better.

Hmmm. This is a rather odd one. Do you have all the missing .vp files and have you mistakenly installed them in the \freespace2\data drawer instead of the \freespace2 drawer. It may be that you are missing some of them (or that your vp files aren`t from FS2 but instead from FS2 : colossus or some other similar source.

One choice is to get vpview and actually look at the .vp files yourself. Any file that is in the .vp can be deleted safely. Tips on how to get and use VPView can be found in my FAQ. If you intend to make your own FS2 missions you`ll probably want VPView at some point anyway.

All of the vp files are in the freespace2 directory not data. Some of them seem to be blanks. Take for instance warble_fs2.vp; this file contains all of the in-game music. If I open this up with DM VPVIEW it will show all of the individual wave files and even the correct size (I assume) that they are supposed to be (like aquataine.wav-----11289640 bytes), but in actuality it is only a 76 byte wave file that is just the sound of a click.

(free from HOTU, what should I expect for nothing)

This is also the same with the CBanimation files.

It seems like , when I installed the full game, the data directory was created, and in this process all of the files inside the vp files were inserted in their corresponding folders in the data directory (like all of the waves from warble.vp into the music folder).

When I finally got a hold of the full stu_fs2.vp it wasn't enough just to replace the old stu.vp and delete the corresponding folder in the data directory. I had to extract all of the voice files from that vp, put them into the (voice) folder, and leave the new stu.vp in the freespace2 directory to get them to work.

I had to do the same thing with the sparky_hi_fs2.vp. So now I have this enormous 350MB (interface) folder in the data directory as well as the 250MB sparky hires.vp in the freespace2 directory, and I need them both in there for the game to work.

Is this making any sense to anybody?
How many MB is a full (legitimate) installation of this game?

about 1.1 to 1.2 GB (I can't say for certain cause I`ve got a lot of mods installed but everything in my main FS2 drawer comes out at about that size)

Can you give me the exact sizes of the.vp files. (at least we can check if they are corrupt)

Oh BTW another idea is to rename your old data drawer and then make a brand new data drawer. Don`t copy your pilot file and just start up FS2.
That should make you a new pilot file and solve any problems that have to do with the old one.
