video card
Hello, all. I have a situation that hopefully someone can help me with...Every time I try to play the game it freezes(I have downloaded the patch). I doesn't happen in the same place every time. The tech screen when looking at ships, the options screen when changing voice volume, and the rest while actually playing the game(usually within the first 30 seconds).
This sometimes happens with a couple other games and dvds, but not the original fs2. My computer says that my graphics card was unable to complete a drawing or something to that effect. I've tried installing new drivers, but none seem to have an effect. I have a GeForce4 Ti 4400 card and WinXP Home. Does anybody have any ideas?

Sounds like "infinite loop" problem.
Description about "infinite loop" can be found here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=64
(note: loop can occur on any motherboard, not just VIA)
But I am quite sure you can get rid of the problem by updating all your drivers. Install WinXP service pack 1 also.
You definitely should update your motherboard chipset drivers at very least.

Yeah, that happened to me too. Try this. Under graphic options, turn the graphics down to nothing. Then load and enter the mission. Once you are in the mission, turn the graphics up to whatever you would have them at. That's what worked for me.

Need a little more info:
1) I've noticed nVidia detonators can be stable or totally unstable, and it's a real crapshoot as to which is better or not. I think I'm using the 30.xx line - whatever the official WHQL ones are these days (not the 40.xx betas) and they're fine. I also had good luck with 28.xx and 29.xx ...
2) What type (brand, if possible, chipset if not) motherboard do you have?
3) You said you patched, but did you patch FS2 to v1.20 and TBP to v1.1? Just checking here.

I'm also using the 30.xx driver. Also, I have a FIC motherboard with a VIA chipset and I have patched FS2 to 1.2 and TBP to 1.1.
Turning my graphics level down really low in the beginning didn't work(oh well).
As I type this I'm downloading Service Pack 1. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the ideas so far.
I've installed the service pack and it made some slight fixes. The computer doesn't freeze any more, only the game's video. The sound continues to play for a little while. Then windows says it detected and recovered from a device failure; once again, the sound plays a little more before stopping. At least the computer doesn't freeze any more.

check your IRQs. sometimes they get themselves mixed up when you do other stuff. I think your sound and video drivers might be using the same IRQ and that is part of your problem.

If thats the case, move the soundcard to another PCI port and see if that helps a'tall.
Usually if the thing hard locks with the sound still playing (or with the sound locked too) its a hardware config problem. Or bad software talking to the hardware.

My video card and network card were using the same IRQ. I disabled the network card and downloaded the 40.xx beta driver from NVIDIA. It seemed to work---I can play the game now, with a few video twitches but I can handle that. I'm going to upgrade my power supply too, 250W isn't enough.
Thanks to everybody who gave suggestions and a very special thanks to the creators of this mod. The game is terrific, I can't wait until release 2.
