What is it? I have no clue to what it does.

Source code is the instructions you use to make a program. Without it you can`t do much editing of a program. With it you can do almost anything (eventually).

With the FS2 source code people will be able to add in all kinds of things to FS2. Bigger ships, more ships, fancier effects and tricks ships can do.

Beams on fighters is one of the first that comes to mind.

Of course all this depends on the FS2 community getting talented C++ programmers to do the alterations to the source code we need. Then the FREDders and modders can make new missions, ships and weapons and then finally people can play with the new changes.

In theory yes. Most of the changes currently being made by fans include Fighter Beams, DirectX8 support, afterburner trails...blinking lights...etc.

We already have fighterbeams, and they are pretty nice. Bobboau made an .exe that had afterburner trails, and fighterbeams hitting shields.

Nope. Fighters SHOULD have beams. Energy weapons should be beams since that's exactly what light is

It's laser beams a metre long that don`t make sense

Can anyone tell me where to get Bobboau's files. I have an early build of his .exe with fighter beams, but no shield hits or 'burner trails and I have forgotten where I got it.

On another note, I agree with karajorma on the energy weapons, but a plasma/particle burst/ion cannon/etc. would be a pulse (you probably knew that anyway, karajorma).

Yep. Knew it But there are definately non beam fighter lasers in FS1. and I can`t remember if the the subach etc are also lasers.

As for the fighterbeam code I would also be interested in playing with that. Is it part of FS_open? If so where do you get the weapons to go with the modified code?

All pulse cannons in FS2 are "lasers". They don't have to be exceptionally realistic about that however.
