I cannot answer for him, but the fact is that RF2 is a quake-like. And a quake-like is to be played with a mouse, not a joypad. Joypads are way too slow for this kind of game, and kill the "fast and furious" pleasure. A mouse allow you to move exactly as you think, which is capital in this kind of game.

For example, since RF1 was originally previewed for PS2, pc players have to set the difficulty level to max to not get bored.

On the other hand, there are games on consoles that lost all their "juice" on a pc. That's life.

It's just another one of those gaming platform preferences. There are a lot of people who swear they will never play a first person shooter on a console. I like them just fine, but have a couple biases of my own, like I'll never play a video football game on a PC.

I disagree with Killmaster that all FPS's HAVE to be played with a mouse. Look at Goldeneye on the N64 that was one of the top sellers for FPS games and it was plenty fast. There are also PC FPS games like Thief that not only encourage but actually require a slower and stealthier technique to get through it.

Well, once again it's a question of taste. But I swear that FPS are definitely pc games, unless you play with a mouse on your console. And as for golden eye, yes it's a very nice FPS, but I find it far too quiet. And the handling, for nice it is, is certainly not reaching the level of a mouse directed fps.

However, I would not play a soccer game or a street fighter like on a pc, that's for sure. I would not have any fun. I tried already, and I was bored after the first minute, even with my pc pad. Those require the handling of console peripherals to be fully appreciated.

On the other hand, Halo on the Xbox is a joke. A killing visual joke, but still, a joke.

The game matters, not the platform. And you cannot deny that each platform has, somehow, its specialities.

The N64 pulled off FPS' quite well, actually. I didn't like AUF on the PS2 much because of the control system... but it isn't too bad.

You just need to know how to hold a controller.

Hehe. Yeah, even though I don't have anything against console FPS games I'd have to say that the mouse/kb control is far superior. I used to think I'd be able to hang if I could hook an N64 controller to my PC, but in retrospect given the tendencies I've developed with a mouse and keyboard there's really no way it would have worked. Console or PC, mouse and keyboard is the way to go.

Mouse/KB = Easy to control aiming
Controller = Auto-aim

Muhaha!

Touche, auto-aim is something that mouse/kb can't really handle gracefully.

Here's an interesting thought though: my dominant hand is my right hand. I mouse with my right hand, hence I'm a good shot when I play mouse/kb.

The N64 controller (as an example) uses the LEFT hand as the aimer on the analog stick, and the right hand on the movement keys. Maybe that's why I do far more elusive movement coupled with strafing runs on console FPS's, while on PC's I tend to fearlessly drop into the middle of a firefight and try and pick up as many points as possible before getting fragged. My more skilled hand has very different tasks at which to try and excel depending on the platform.

Good with a soldering iron? You could always build this:

http://www.stndev.btinternet.co.uk/

To drive it you'll need DirectPad Pro which'll make it show up in Windows' Game Controller Control Panel just like any other Joystick.

I wasn't speaking about any specific game, so you can't really call me a beginner without sounding stupid.
And when did I say I used auto-aim?

In Perfect Dark, even with auto-aim, you still need to point your gun right at the target (depending on the difficulty). The auto-aim makes up for the few degrees or so of precision that you lose due to the nature of the joystick.

The dominant hand doesn't matter with control sticks because you use your thumb instead of your whole hand.
You can, of course, hold the N64 controller with your right thumb on the stick. The best PD player I've ever known did this. Whenever he needed to use the right side of the controller, he simply reached over with his left hand.

Oh dear, I'm rambling again.

Actually no, I haven't. I toyed with the idea of building the PlayStation pad adaptor a while ago which is how I knew the N64 one existed but with all the trouble I would had to have gone to it would have been much easier to simly buy the PSX version of the game.

I'd just buy a PS2->USB adaptor.

Oh wait...I did. It even supports the rumble features, or so it says, but I haven't gotten them to work yet.

Are you running it from the power provided from the USB port or an external plugpack? Can it even be run off an external plugpack?

Apparently, at least with the parallel port adaptors, you need an external source of about 5-9V to power to rumble motors since the parallel port can't supply enough juice to power them. I don't know about USB ports though...
