Also, if anyone has 'Startrek - Starfleet Command Volume II', you will notice that there are one or two different fighter types for each race.

Several sources indicate the StarTrek universe has fighters, and the two that come into my mind are firstly when picard was assimilated, and the borg cube reached sol, on it's way towards, it destroyed 3 fighters. The other place that comes in mind is in Deep Space 9, while The dominion occupies DS9, and are about to disarm the minefield protecting the wormhole, there is a large fleet engagement between a dominion-cardassian fleet and a federation fleet, in which capt Cisco tries to bait the cardassians using his bombers, which are clearly much smaller than even the defiant.
There are a few more places, but I don't really remember them

Yup, fighters are there...but no Star Trek mod for FreeSpace. It wouldn't make much sense anyway. Klingon academy gives you a far more better ST XP then FreeSpace could give.

Also,

In FreeSpace 2, on Easy, you can finish the game...

In KA, i can't finish the game on Easy.

The furthest i got is the mission where you use the experimental BoP.

Also, my crew never got any exp......perhaps it is the difficulty, but even on Easy, you should get some exp.

also, you can edit FS2 missions so you get the advantage.

Klingon Academy is a good game....it would be better if you could make yourself invincible.
