Severed Dreams et al

I was thinking, if the EA ships release is going to come out months before the EA Civil War campaign comes out then we will all get our chance to create our own versions of the 'Severed Dreams', 'No Surrender, No Retreat', Between the Darkness and the Light' and 'Endgame' battles

I'm sure that these will be of varying quality, but it will be fun to see everyone's take on each battle. Will the creator concentrate on mission balance, realism, atmoshphere, cut-scenes from the show, etc?

Also, we may see some huge battles

My take on 'Severed Dreams' in terms of the mod is that the forces should consist of:
Babylon 5 + 4 wings of 6 Starfuries (with one extra wave each)
Alexander + 2 wings of 6 Starfuries (extra wave each)
Churchill + 2 wings of 6 Thunderbolts (extra wave each)
3 Sharlins + Whitestar as reinforcements

against:
Agrippa + 2 wings of 6 Thunderbolts (extra wave each)
Roanoke + 2 wings of Starfuries (extra wave each)
2 Hyperions + 1 wing of 6 Starfuries each
2 Breaching Pods
1 Omega + 2 Hyperions as reinforcements

That gives a grand total of:
1 space station
12 capital ships
1 escort ship
86 fighters

This keeps the total number of ships within the Fred 2 limits yet provides the full forces available to the fleets in the battle (breaching pods aside).

I've got End Game almost covered. It works quite nicely. Sheridan does his silly little speach. At the point where his XO warns that the defence grid is getting a fix on the fleet's position, you can visibly see the defence platforms waking up and turn to face you. Then they open fire and all hell breaks loose. The mission will be a race against time to destroy all the platforms before they turn and fire at Earth 10 minutes in.

This limit wont change if you add more memory will it? some claimed it did, and I recently doubled the memory to 512MB and saw no difference (didnt do that on purpose just for FS2 )

Your orders are to protect the fleet. The best way to do that is shooting down Nemesis 2 missiles. You can try and take out platforms yourself, but it's best waiting for the Minbari fighters to arrive before trying anything fancy like that, otherwise the pulse cannons will make short work of you.

Even with the Thunderbolt, its pretty tough to take out a G.O.D. Sat by yourself.

Your best bet is to help shoot down missiles. Thats what I've found so far. We'll make it look uber cool when its ready anyways so you'll enjoy it

I was only making the point that people will make the Severed Dreams mission with the next release of EA ships if you don't release one yourself straightaway. This is not a "threat" but a fact of life. Also, no matter how good your version is, if it does not stretch the Fred 2 mission designer to its limits then people will make their own versions.

I am sure that your version will be great and will fit seamlessly into your campaign (hell it may be any one of us who applied to IceFire with missions who shall end up making the mission), I was just pointing out a few facts

haderak, it seems that adding RAM beyond about 64MB does not increase the ship limit in Fred 2, only the performance in game. As far as I know, you may have up to 100 ships in total and 30 capital ships in particular in any one mission, regardless of whether or not the ships would be present in the mission at any given mission time.

There is already an EA civil war mission out there. It has 3 Novas, and a load of fighters opposing 2 Novas and 2 Hyperions. There are more fighters zipping around than I care to count. The only problem with it is that you side is guaranteed to win if you survive.
All you have to do is beat the snot out of the opposing Starfurys, and your cap ships will make the opposing caps, all look like Novas. ("No boom today, boom tomorrow...") It would be nicer if you had to take out a few turrets AND deal with Clark's hoards of 'Furys.

That's my mission, my first attempt at Fred 2 mission creation. The objective is not just to survive but to try to save all three of your novas (it is possible).

I've gotten a lot better since then
