FRED for B5 EA-Min War Demo
Does any one get the same problem that i do?
My FRED crashes if i put more then 30 Capital ships
on the map, now i know that sounds like alot, but if your only
faceing a couple caps. at a time theres no slow down, so ive
seperated them significantly, Can any one open up there FRED
and place oh say 31 hyperions and see if they get the same problem.
I havent tryied placeing an insane amount of fighter to see if
theres the same problem.
And if the problem exists for everyone, anyone know how to correct it, or is it just too much for the FRED to handle, which doesnt make sense, i dont even have the ship 3-d models on.

It's all in the RAM.
I have 128MB and can have 32 capital ships or 100 fighters/capital ships in Fred2 at any one time. Spacing and timing is irrelevant, just the raw ship numbers.
If having so many capital ships is important, try making it into a "Red Alert" mission.
This is one reason why I'm getting 1GB of RAM very soon (only around £100)

For the best explanation, look in the index of the Fred 2 help file.
For an example of its use, look at the events architecture of the fourth and fifth missions of the B5 demo missions.

Ive not figured the problem out yet, The person who
suggested that it was a Ram problem was incorrect, i
have more ram than 128, i have upwards of 300 MB, and
ive Free'd up 92% of that with a free up program, thats
not the problem, i get a page fault, i think its very techinical
so ill take it to freespace 2 tech support.
Thanks for your help anyways guys.
Hey does anyone know if there is a place where i can
download models, like say narn or centari, i know theres no release yet, but maybe i can come up with some missions in FRED.

Tech support does not support FRED2. It is as it is.
I got to 22 Hecate's before FRED2 gave an Illegal Error and crashed (running FS2 tables at the moment).

I know, sorry, what i ment by tech support was Forums, LoL
I wouldnt ever wait on a telephone 4 hours to get Some help.
Heres a link: http://vbb.volition-inc.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
for anyone with similar questions.
But all in all it turns out that it FRED just cant handle too many,
Unless you open in in MSword and edit it in there, in which you would need to be a friggin genius to do so.
Only solution would be to warp in new ones when older ones die out.

quite late but don´t mind
What the hell do you want with 30 MBS´s??
Its a nice idea, but most PC wont survive this mission!
My little sweet p3 750 already sucks with the unofficial mission withe the new ships.
I think a Geforce 2 360 Ram should be enough, isn´t it.

You better be either running 2k (or even better, XP) or seriously thinking about it if you're going to put that much RAM in. Windows 9x can't support more than about 512Mb RAM.

It's a Christmas overhaul:
Upgrade:
PIII 600MHz - P4 1.7GHz
128MB RAM - 1GB DDRRAM
Motherboard (of course)
W98 - WXP
Possibly TNT2 32MB - GeForce 3 64MB
Should be able to do this for around £300-£400 (excluding the video card) through contacts in the computer business. It all depends on how much I spend generally for Christmas presents for other people.

It's not only the RAM, it's also processor power. I have 256 RAM and P500mhz, and I can put about 25-30 capships in a mission before the illegal error.

Now, the question is, have Microsoft fixed this issue in XP?
What is the maximum amount of RAM that XP can support?
BTW, I don't think that system specs beyond a certain level actually have any effect on Fred2.

XP supports up to 4 GB RAM.
Server versions even more.
