I have a mojor huge and terrible problem

My computer recently was killed by what we think is FS2. It started dying every other booting after i downloaded this . Before I would get this error while closing FS2, "FS2 has caused an error in kernel. FS2 will now close." What do I need to do to prevent this from happpening again?

What do you mean your PC was killed? does it runn at all or it just behave jerky in windows?

It could be a virus that got into the zip file.
recenctly a new devastating virus apeared and it easely infects anything sent by e-mails and downloads. If you see corruptions in the peogram windows, open explorer and dragg it arround your screen, if it leaves trash all around, then You got it. The virus might alredy started to destroy data on your har disk. format it as soon as you can and clean your e-mail for messages with files atatched to them. Also when you got it up and running again the 1st thing you do is to get a recent anti-virus software and dowload the latest virus definitions and clean every recordable disk you imput data to recently.

If its a hardware problem (check CPU temp) then you might whant to send it to be fixed or do it yourself, evem more some viruse totaly destroy your computer by messing with the bios. if thsi is yur case then you might need another PC or at lest get a new motherboard, if your PC is recent enough.

I think you mean the CODE RED virus. If you're running Windows NT/2000, there is a patch for Internet Explorer that protects against it (providing you have SP2), but I think the best way to stop it is to just download IE6.

1) You got a virus
2) You have screwed something up yourself
3) Windows...

So much possible reasons and not too much answers because we really don't know what's the problem. Can you tell more about your problem? Like, what error messages and when, what you have done just before the problems occured, apart from downloading unofficial ships. And what you mean "killed"?

FreeSpace 2 nor any other program just magically "kills" your computer. Games are the least dangerous to a system because they only impact the OS while the game is running.

Now, potentially a game could do some damage to the registry and heck, sometimes stuff happens, but its less likely that FreeSpace 2 by itself would manage to do something.

Now, the file your downloaded might have a virus. You might have picked up a virus somewhere else and it may be totally coincidental that maybe its time to reformat and start fresh.

Its not CODE RED, its another one, it caused world wide havoc last week, aaagh I cant remenber its name...

Update i think it was W32_taliban (not a joke) it sent stuuf over to the E-mails including ludricous messages concerning the atacks, it turned out the author only took advantage of the so spoken subject it had no connections at all.

Exclamation

Edwin read: FreeSpace 2 does not cause system instablility. It has NOTHING to do with FreeSpace 2. FreeSpace 2 *could* temporarily crash your system if something were very wrong, but it would not corrupt any system files and I very much doubt that it would do anything to the registry so a game like FreeSpace 2 has a smaller chance of doing any damage to your system.

Conflicting drivers, hardware, long term system usage, and hardware troubles are more likely.

The MOD you downloaded perhaps caused it (not the MOD itself but a virus that attached itself perhaps) but I view that with skepticism as well. Buy a virus scanner and keep it upto date....thats your best bet.

Be conscious about what you install, but not paranoid. If you have no virus protection, your computer is wide open to viral attack should it come.

I haven't heard of anyone having trouble with Windows ME. I don't like Windows ME, I think 98SE is better and XP being best.

I'm not at all upset, just read what I have to say and take it as you may (hey, I'm a poet now ). And make sure you get that virus scanner (McAfee or Norton - doesn't really matter).

Yeah, virus scanning is good; I mean, it's very possible to run a system with no virus scanner, and just be exceptionally careful about what you download (like, uh, me on my old box) but peace of mind's nice.

If you don't have a Firewall either, it might be a good thing to get one of those as well. Some virus checkers can be supplied with a firewall in a double pack (Norton, for example). The reason for this is that some with an Firewall-unprotected system can have a virus simply uploaded, on just clicking a link.

Don't worry too much if you use PXO, as they have a help section of using FS2 through a firewall.

AAAAAAAAAAHHH!! theres the explanation...GET RID OF WINDOWS ME!!! your problem is not a virus or FS2 its your OS.
Windows ME has the honour of being the crapiest piece of S**t microssoft has ever released!! I had that one installed on my PC when I boght it. In the 2nd day I used it it crashed my PC everytime I tried to run a program, Problems in kernell and not only... messed DLL's you name it...I format my HD and installed Win98. I never had any problems after that. If you keep using that OS youll runn into problems sooner or later.

I have a friend who sells PC's and I ususaly go to his assembly shop ( To play multiplay Starcraft with the custumers PC's as burn-in tests!! ) and sometimes windows ME would be picky with certain systems, we could not determine a pettern but we seen that hapen several times.I had the bad luck of being one such case. Get Win98 or XP if you can get your hand to it.

WIN ME IS A TIME BOMB!!
