Freespace 2 Released For Public Download!
It's official. Freespace 2 has now become available for legal public access through the underdogs 'failware' site.
This bodes both good and bad for the community. Good in the fact that now everyone (with access to a decent connection) can now enjoy freespace 2 for themselves. Bad in the fact that now considered 'failware' the odds of FS3 are even further off than any glimmer of hope we had before (though thats not to say it won't ever happen in the next hundred thousand years ).
Anyway, you can find the download page here... http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150
The file is 219 megs in size so you will need a good connection to download this really. A scanned PDF version of the manual is available from the site also. But to cut down on the file size a number of the in game movies where removed from the file package (a small price to pay for a free game).
Be aware that the site gets a tad slow at times. And you shouldn't download more than one file at a time from the underdogs site as they have rules against it and will ban you from downloading further files for a while if you do.
Anyway, stop sitting there gaping at me. Go forth and spread the word.

Abandonware isn't legal, trust me.
Second, it has no voices and no movies. Also, only the 640x480 low-res artwork is available; you can't get 1024x768 high-res. Lame++
And IMO losing the excellent voicework and the movies make it so, indeed, you ARE losing quite a bit.

A sad end IMO to a great game.

well, yeah. but it isn't really like you can go to the nearest store and drown yourself in freespace2 packages, is it? there are always some people that can't get a hold of it any way other than downloading it. I was lucky to see it in a store two years ago.

Actually there are a few online stores selling FS2. I know of no less than 5 people who've bought it, legally and completely, within the last few days.
Secondarily, were I to copy FS2, I'd damn well do it making some CD images, not this incomplete-rip crap.
I don't know. Maybe it's because I think FS2 is so damn good, experiencing it in any reduced manner is just ... wrong.

It does feel wrong. I played my first time through on a ripped FS2, trust me, it did cement itself as my favorite game of all time, but it a lot better with movies and ****.
It's not illegal though. Copying is allowed in the games licence agreement.

...on a personal basis, and for friends and family. You can give out copies only if someone specifically asks you for it; you can't post the whole bloody thing for anyone to download.

Right.
We try to stay away from anything even questionable as "legal or not"... we'd rather stay with the legal part and not take any chance at all. but thanks for pointing this out.
i'm not going to close this thread (yet) as i don't see it necessary, but please no one post anything more in this regard

i rember when fs2 was avialble in stores, my 3d card wasnt working fs1 worked with out 3d card and i heard fs2 needed one at the time and wasnt fixed for antoerh few months, i was low on money and didnt want to buy it until i knew it would work, when my computer was up to sratch fs2 was long gone, i was hoping a budget verson might get realeased like other companies do, this RIP at UD is the best i can manage i downloaded the voices and got them going, i just needed the high res stuff and maybee the cutscenes if they can be compressed they are huge.

It is still available here in Germany in a white label edition and it should be available over some online stores, too. (which moron added that smiley?)
