Remember the 'extra' video from Silent Threat? A Shivan leapt on a Thoth and tore its plates off - from outside. So they can at least sustain themselves for some length of time in vacuum. Plus, when the Terrans boarded the Shivan freigher they had to wear helmets and there was little gravity. All that shows is Shivans don't love gravity, which we know, and that they possibly breathe something different to us, if I'm being critical.

There is one thing you're forgetting about fighters and landing that's happened since the Great War: shields. What if the field shape of shields can be modified and manipulated to give fighters such as the Herc II 'wings' for atmospheric flight? In a similar but slightly odder vein, what if capships like the Orion have shield emitters for this role, but the frequency of weapons disrupts them, or they can only stop nitrogen and oxygen molecules penetrating the shield, etc etc?
Anyway...on topic, I think that the most compelling argument for Shivan installations is that Volition drew one, if you look in the concepts on the FS2 site. That's how I imagine a Shivan base - a space anthill.
