Well, the USS must be there because of the American pride...
They've always thought themselves as superior to other nations in all areas of life and technology, in which space tech is not the least. "In the future they'll remember us as the great conquerors..." and so on.

But still, there are others with even greater dreams and they're not tied to the strict military rules, i.e. they CAN do something without the army getting involved in everything interesting. As can be guessed, I find the military to be an irrational bottleneck in space travel since most of those guys who sit there making decisions have no clue about space matters.

Enterprise is not a nimitz-class. nimitz starts from CVN68 and enterprise is CVN65.

but why would it be united star ship? That would be saying that all star ships that dont have a U somewhere in front of there names are divided up into pieces/factions etc...

jsut got to say - the enterprise shuttle is no longer in service it was the shuttle prototype - and it was named enterprise bacause the star trek watching public so demanded it be called =) at least hats what i read somewhere =) but wether or not its true its defaintly out of service now
