You know we have seen one in action....not for very long, but for a time.

I didn't have anything smart to begin with so I'll begin with complaints as usual:
I hate those people who write the scripts for TV series. Not all the time, but at least when they miss a great opportunity to glue the watchers to their TV screens. One of those times was all the time when they made B5. That's because they didn't meke it long enough. The Shadows remained as a mystery for as long as they were with it. Since they were so old I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been difficult to tell us a little more about their habits and themselves, such as that "transport or battlecrab"-thing. That would have caused the series to be at least two seasons longer and you'd probably have dozens of more nice ships to make . How about an address?

I agree, Kurare. It would have been nice to expand on the shadows but the main problem facing JMS and the makers of B5 was that there weren't enough people with confidence in the series to fund JMS and let him do what he wanted. He planned five seasons and was told (at the beginning of season two) that he could have enough money for four. So he condensed the storyline and to fit four seasons. Then in the middle of season four the people with the purse strings suddenly woke up and decided that B5 was a success (like DUH!!!) and should have a fifth series. By then much of the main storyline (ie the shadows) had already been settled and they had to write a whole bunch of other stories and introduce new characters to pad it out.
It is a shame but it also means that people writing campaigns for the MOD won't be so limited by what they can do with shadow vessels. The main limits are our imaginations.

Yeah, the Shadows and Vorlons would still have left when they did but a lot of the Shadow legacy with the Drakh and especially within EarthGov would have been expanded upon. The Byron situation was obviously only filler material, even though JMS had always planned on doing something on them. JMS always seemed to thread three plots together at once, so for season five it would have made sense to have more of the Shadow influence in EarthGov (as partially seen in Crusade) intertwined with Byron and the Drakh.
Although JMS did condense the end of the EA civil war into season 4 and push back the Drakh-Centauri issue, the only real changes to the arc occured after the midpoint of season 4. JMS has publically stated more than once that the First Ones story arc would have concluded in episode 6 of series 4 no matter what the situation with season 5 was.
