And just look at post-WW1! The only country that was forced to disarm (Germany) went on to start the next great war. Obviously, disarmament is evil and is to blame.

Canada contributed a lot of troops to the European theatres of WW2. They were a major participant.

As my incredilbly boring history teacher will tell you Germany didn't necessarily start WW2, there were a number of things that caused it, the most obvious ones just happen to be Germany's fault.

I think invading Poland, Belgium, etc helped....

They didnt necessarily start WW1 I think, but they did the second one. I dont think they started building all those shiny tanks years prior because they were bored.

Ahem.

Of course, what (most of) you guys probably don't hear about the British armed forces is that they're crap too. Our Navy doesn't do live fire simulations anymore, the sailors just shout 'bang' and a computer logs the shell trajectory etc. The ships run engines on half of the time, and in 'neutral' the rest, so they don't use fuel. And so on, and so on.

Thats total Misinformation! The British Armed Forces are (one of) the best in the world! Also disarmament is not the way to go, nukes etc may be the only thing standing between us and destruction by asteroids/aliens. The good people that have the moral fibre to use armed forces for peacekeeping are the ones getting rid of the weapons making the job of evil people who wont give up guns easier.

All threads must go off-topic. It is an undeniable fact of life.
If it were not for the unescapable off-topic occurances the balance of the forums would become unstable and our universe, as we know it, would cease to exist and all beings would be banished to the off-topic realm of Boogalooo!

Yeah, seeing as we have chainsaw-equipped battalions, we're leading the world in dismemberment.

Canada has the best diesel powered submarines in the world, 8 of them bought from the RN for 5 dollars (US ) They should have gone for 100 mill each at least but it was a trade off ti use large swathes of canada as a perm training area for UK armed forces.

So be happy that Canada now has the ultimate in non nuclear hunter killer submarines (better then anything the US have) now if only i could remmber the class name

Hey thats nothing. 2 years ago in Australia we spent about 8 Billion on producing one of the loudest submarines. Not only was it loud but its computer systems were out of date as well.

The point is why does canada need a big army?

It has no overseas holdings or commitments, infact the UK is obliged to defend Canada. (unless of course you think Canada is going to get invaded by China via alaska ala Fallout).

The problem is in the modern world rich countries like Canada (and it other I8 nation freinds *cough* italy) need to contribute more to policing the rest of the world. Yes they are involved in many peacekeeping operations but as mehcanincs and rear echelon. The Canadian defence budget would be best spent on a few thousand highly trained troops with little or no amour to be quickly deplyed anywhere in the world, either that or a few squadrons of upto date fighter/bombers (JSF, Typhoon etc.) to aid in NATO/UN bombing. But to specialise on one thing because the budget is too small to diversify and the whole millitary suffers (as it is suffering now).

Good point. We don't need a big armed forces, but we do need one that isn't suffering like it is now. Our navy is in pretty good shape I hear....infact, except for the Alreigh Burke class destroyers, our destroyers are the stealthiest around apparently. Very low radar cross section.

Our airforce isn't too bad either, except that they are F/A-18A's and they are at least 20 years old, and we only have 128 of them or something.

Now, I doubt anyone is going to come and attack us. The Americans would never do that, they've already culturally assimilated us. No big deal And I doubt anyone else would. Didn't know that the UK has an obligation to defend us, but thats pretty good.

We need new freaking Helicopters. The Sea Kings are aweful

Y'know, those F/A 18's are deadly, high-performance fighters. Don't put them down there with the old F-4 Phantoms.
