Actually I think we did see the different species of Shivans.

The Lucifer fleet, for Example:

SD Lucifer - Only One, Very unique style with purples and reds.

SFr Asmodeus - Green? Yellow? Where did these colors come from?

SB Seraphim - Just look at it, it looks like it's made of glass. (Ok, not the Lucifer fleet, but bare with me.)

SD Demon - Another very Unique ship. Greys and red. Colors not on some other Shivan ships.

Then, the great War II fleet:

SD Ravana - Many weird tubes out of nowhere, looks almost like a plant.

SJ Sathanas - Big, Unweildy, Black and red. No Grey. Odd spires in the front.

If you ask me (and I know no one did ) They are not the same breed of shivans.

It could be color coded.

LIn the case of the Asmodeus, those colors could stand out to the Shivans. Like an ambulance.(not saying that the Asmodeus is a shivan meat wagon )

On the Asmodeus being a Shivan "meat wagon" it's more than plausible.

A major problem with many campaigns is that the current vessels in FS are rarely used or expanded upon.

Fortunately, some underlooked ships like the Asmodeus class will be used quite interestingly...

Okay. Arent we getting a little off the subject here?

Anyways, about the different species of Shivans making the different types of ships, did anyone notice that all Shivan ships have these pointy arm thingys? Like the Cain and Lilith, it has these three arm thingys in the front. The Sathanas, Lucifer, and Ravana all have these huge arms that house these powerful beam cannons. The Demon has these small pointy things facing downward that does absolutely nothing but the thingys still exist. Some fighters and bombers even have these arms like the Manticore and the Seraphim have these arms. The Mara has these spikes pointing downward and stuff...

So anyways, about this installation thing. Like the "scientists" said in the Freespace2 game (courtesy or V, who you cant really trust what they put into a game) that Shivans may have evolved from subspace and, why not, their installation is subspace itself. The could use the "subspace ripples" to miraculously piece debris or parts together and then use the beam cannons or the Shivan's "beam cannons" located in their head (remember the FS1 cutscene, inside the freighter, where the people got ambushed and that guy got blown away by this awsome looking particle beam that the Shivan used?; yeah, that) to fuse the debris together. I mean, why not...?

The only solid matter known of in sub-space is from ships passing through it.

Similarly, ships within sub-space are within different "planes" of it, and only with the advent of sub-space tracking could ships enter the same corridor.

All in all, due to this nature of sub-space being planar, the Shivans developing in it is rather ludicrous.

for quite a while now I've beleved there were diferent shiven sects, FS2 ships were very diferen't to fs1 ships, most notabley FS1 ships were asimetric and more squareish less alive looking completely alien and unatural, fs2 ships were all pointies and dark blackness the living embodyment of death, they look like the same technology but diferen't stiles. add to that the nearly contrary atitudes of the shivans regarding the GTA\PVN\GTVA between fs1 and fs2, it seems as if there is some sort of cultural divide between them. it seems as if the lucifer fleet was a weak and downright feable shivan faction compared to the sathanas fleet.

and shivans don't have instalations large slow ships maybe but they wouldn't have any craft incapable of subspace travile.

i see your point with the lack of any LARGE shivan installations, but being theorized as of a hive mind, wouldn't they have just one installation (like i mentioned before) where the core of their intelligence lies. A metal encrusted homeworld if you will.

I'm not too sure of the different design philosophies, hell, i'm not even too sure that the Sathanas is the largest ship in their fleet.
i guess we will just have to wait very patiently to see whether or not things will go our way and FS3 will be created (I Sure hope so).

One would think there would be an FS3 by now.

The shivens still need something to build the instial structure, and soemthing that's bigger then the deathstar is not reialistic. Something that is movable but big enought to help make the SD Jurrernots, Well, I'm thinking the frames that you see where they part the star ships in Star Treck.

But then those would mostly be wire frames, and in Dericlet, I don't think the Shivens need to use them much. Mostly because look at how powerful they are and how much they can dish out in pain.

So, yes those ships that blew the sun can be very old, but they need to have been built in the first place.

As for SNA and DNA-RNA. The Shivens must use DNA-RNA for them selfs look at the moive and the info in the FS1 game and in the FS2 game.

And SNA for the ships. Though a Mix of the three is not unlikely.

On average everyone agrees that Shivan spaceyards are "frame rigs" that synthesize hull materials through a biological or quasi-biological process?

...and that these frames are jump capable?

well, the frames could be packed up, loaded onto freighters and taken to a destination. As for construction, well look at Total Annihilation, "Nanolathing" does it hold merit?

That frame theory sounds very reasonable.

Also looking at a back post, ns33 are you saying that because some spikes have beam cannons, and all Shivan ships have spikes, all Shivan ships have beam cannons?

Evolution in design? As the species seem to have beam tech already in FS1 (look at hallfight FMV) it seems to me as a natural step to take.

Here's a thought, expanding on the nanotech idea.

What if the various internal components were produced at some unspecified rear area location, but instead of making the hull out of plates and such inside a big framework, the components were set out in zeegee, perhaps strung together, and then hordes of nanomachines used to contruct the hull around them. This monobody approach could explain the incredible resistance of the Lucifer and Lilith for their size, as their hull could potentially be a single molecule.
