OK, how many years was it between Wing Commander II and III?
The Wing Commander community suffered a regression, it's true, from WC2 to WC3 (I think it was 3 years, don't quote me.)
But it was still vibrant...that is, until Origin killed it by saying "WC Online! Oh wait! The series founder is gone, we'll just screw it up like we screwed over Privateer!"
Interesting sidenote: Erin Roberts' game was originally going to be released as The Darkening but then Origin put the Privateer label on it. Huge mistake, IMHO. The original Privateer is still one of the most kick-ass games out there, right up there with X-COM UFO Defense for 0ld sk00l goodness.
So, I guess what I envision is a dedicated core community - mostly centered here, actually - staying on, because it's easier to keep a community now than it was pre-Internet like when the gap from WC2/WC3 occured.
I see the game floating into obscurity, then when/if FS3 starts getting developed, people will hear and go "Oh yeah! I remember hearing about FS2 in 1999! I'll check it out!" and it'll peak again.
I guess it could be called a sine wave of popularity, sorta kinda.
