i'd hoped i'd never see the "there are too many connections in /*whatever/a/a/a/a/a/a/a/a/" on HLP. oh well, i guess it was inevitable

I sincerely doubt HLP will be up untill after the weekend, though I still hope for a recovery within 24 hours.

Say, what would it cost to host HLP on an ad-free, stable server?

I bet that, should it come to something like Gamespy no longer hosting it, that the community would put money together to keep it going somewhere...

I'm pretty sure the whole thing could be hosted for less than $50 a year, plus like $10 for the domain name. Thats actually not a bad idea, the community could come up with that cash - no problem.

letsee hlp has been very unstable due to too much money flowing into it already so some hackers decided to take down almost any gamespy hosting server there is.

If HLP needs less than 300 MB of space, I could probably host it mostly-free for the next 2 years. No ads, either.

I've got a free 1 and 1 account, from the giveaway awhile back.

Edit: Make that 500 MB.

we need a better backup system for this ****, would there be some way to copy the whole forum every hour or so to a backup server, and when HLP goes down we can get redirected there.

HLP is, or at least, was the largests site on gamespy as far as space goes - I think they managed to trim it down (considerably) to about two point something gigs awhile back - twould probably be bigger again by now though.

The biggest? No way, are you serious? How could that be, there are WAY more popular "Planet" sites out there, especially for FPS', that host tons of mods and files.

He's correct. HLP is the biggest. Gamespy have frequently said so.

uh-oh.

Well, a two gig server is going to cost quite a few, but still, it might be raseable.

Ok, got a letter back from GS tech support:

quote:

One of the other users on the server is causing the problem. We are
working with them to fix it, and you shouldn't see the problems any
longer after tomorrow.

Poor Tink, she replies to all of my emails. I feel so bad for constantly asking stupid questions....

Tink is soo nice.
I don't know what the problem is, but there's a woman behind it.

quote:

It's no problem. I just feel bad that it's affecting everyone on
Dynamic 4, and I have been hearing about ALL of them. :-)

But I can't just delete her entire site without at least trying to help
her to get it backed up and saved first. She thought she had fixed the
problem last time, but it came back within a week I guess which is why
you guys keep seeing it flux like this.
Thanks again for your patience. :-)

Because HLP hosted sites have a nasty habit of storing their content locally rather than on fileplanet
