Calm down... your mistake isn't that bad...
I've seen many books where the value for Alpha Centauri is 3.4 light years, and others with 4 light years.
It must be the advances in astronomy that make their calculations more acurate... either that, or I have absolutly no idea what so ever.

Well, Einstein never proved that FLT is impossible and if you really look into the relativity laws written by him you'll notice several interesting things. What most people mean by FLT being impossible is that the relative velocity of movement between to objects cannot exceed 300 000 km/sec, which is the speed of light yet there are no fixed points in the universe so the objects themselves might be moving yet not in relation to another object and with references, movement is meaningless. By severing references, we could theoritically be anywhere at the same time. Now, how to do that, well that's a different problem.

Any of you guys ever read the Night's Dawn trilogy, by Peter F. Hamilton (starts with "The Reality Dysfunction"). Fantastic series (better than Lord of the Rings, in my opinion) and it projects a quite realistic picture of the time around 2600 (accounting for a possible slowdown in technological progress).
Anyway... maybe these aliens are like the Tyrathca - almost robotic, strictly logical hive creatures with no interest in conquest or contact, or the Kiint - extremely advanced and simply observing to catch any methods and technologies that have slipped through their grasp. Alternatively, they could have evolved into energy patterns, like the Ly-cilph.....
His FLT revolves around energy compression and wormhole generation, which may be a possibility.
[hint]READ THESE BOOKS!!!![/hint]
