Nothing, really (That assumes, of course, that you aren't thinking of putting Win9x on whetver machine you end up building...)

Seriously though, the GF4MX' aren't really GF4's at all but rather souped up GeForce 2's (the anti aliasing on the is supposedly better or something) so, even for budget gaming, they're probably not a good choice. A better choice is probably a GF3 Ti200 or even a stock GF3 if they're cheap enough.

well, according to the Creative Site, their GF4 MX460 beats their GF3 Ti200.

Also the GF3 Ti200 costs about 5x as much.

i am on a VERY extreme budget.

so, you think i should get a GF3 Ti200 assuming i can find one cheap enough.?????

Creative's trying to sell you a more expensive card. Do not under any circumstances get a GF4 MX. You're hamstringing yourself because it's not even a GF4. nVidia's playing the marketing name game and IMO lying.

How a GF3 Ti200 costs five times as much as a GF4 is beyond me. Not only is that A) impossible but B) impossible.

I can get you a Gainward GeForce3 Ti200 (and Gainward is, IMO, the best manufacturer out there) 64MB = $113. 128MB = $139.

http://www.newegg.com

Gotta love Newegg.

oh, pengiun: NEVER put Windows Me on ANY system if you can avoid it. That sucks. I'm also with Admiral LSD; XP is superior in every respect. XP > 2000 >>>>>>>>> 98 > 95 > Me.

i visited the gainward.de site and i think they are robbing you for charging so much for cards.

£299 ex VAT for a GF4 Ti4400, when you can get an ASUS or Creative one for £100 less.

And i dont have a problem with my FS2 its not slow at all. The only problem ive ever had is on the video, and that is that the sound stops every few seconds (for a few tenths of a second)and then continues from where it left off. Not sure why this is? maybe my sound card, or maybe the read-ahead(set to maximum). The same happened on FS1 on the vid scenes, so it must be something to do with the sound or the CD, cos the video plays perfect.

I ran FS2 on an
Intel 200 Mhz
64 MB RAM
8MB ATi Mach 64
SB AWE 64
and WinME
It ran slow at times but usually I could just play on with no problems.

well after looking through all of this, you can take Heinrich's advice and get a radeon 8500, but my forewarning still stands. The joke often passed through my house, is that intel and ati were given alien technology, and somehow can't make them completely operable (ati just cant get drivers working. oh wait, i'm beating a dead mule.

NEXT.

okay. Windows XP or a stable Linux platform. Dont go any lower than 2000 if you can help it. Alpha got the math right.

XP > 2000 >>>>>>>>> ME > 98 > 95> dos > 3.1

Alpha, should we copy/paste orange's upgrade thread here?

well, i just don't know what to get.

i have had rotten luck with computers ever since i went to AMD.

I went to AMD because they are significantly cheaper, if i knew i was going to get this trouble, i would have got a PIV, the amount i have spent on AMD motherboards, i could have had a PIV 2.2Ghz 1.0GB RDRAM by now.

I have read reviews about the Gainward Video Cards, they supposed to be good.

So, can you guys make me a choice....???

GAINWARD GF4 Ti4200
or
ATI Radeon 8500

If you have a GF4 Ti, please tell me what OS and Drivers you have running.

If you have a ATI Radeon 8500, please tell me what OS and Drivers you are running.

thank you in advanced.
