Well,
Red Faction was ok, but it was cool to be able to blow up your surroundings.
I HATE Interplay, they Suck big time.
Volition has a chance to Buy the rights to FreeSpace, i hope they won't be dumb enough to not get it.
But if Interplay know that Volition wants the rights to FreeSpace, wouldn't they get greedy and charge a massive price for it?
I think Interplay stopped Volition from making FreeSpace 3 because they got jealous.
I really wanna know why the shivans blew up the Capella Star and i mean the real reason.
They had better buy the rights to Freespace and make a VERY good sequal.

OMG, yes, yes, yes.
We're so close.
LONG LIVE FOR FREESPACE.
The FPS idea is a good idea. But it's unpractical. It would need more CDs and more RAM, etc. (FPSs always needs more RAM)

As a matter of fact none of the space sims of late 90's has sold anywhere near the estimated numbers. Though I-War was a hit (in some rates), I-War 2 flopped, as did both Freespaces. I don't know of the latest X-Wing series games, but I think they've fallen below normal sales as well.
There can and are several reasons for this downfall. Simply too many games, perhaps - new "ground-breaking and breath-taking" games appear almost monthly, and not many people have the money to buy all the newest games. I, for example, am a poor student, soon going to army, so I buy games only when they are sold out at low prices. Back in early 1990's there were just a few hits pro year, so names like "Doom" or "TIE Fighter" were familiar to everyone.
The case of FS3 is not unique - I-War 3 has not that desperate situation, but somewhat quite near. Colony Wars is dying out, Imperium Galactica is almost buried. The genre of space "simulations" is so full, that so called bussiness darwinism takes place: only those who have the money and new ideas - and marketing! - can break through. I must admit that I am very skeptical about resurrecting the FS series again. Does Volition have funds and resources to make a game that would clearly go above and beyond FS2, without getting too bound to the inside information (this is something FreeSpace 2 brilliantly avoided).
In the end I must disagree in some points that FS series would be "an unknown gem". For example in Finland, where we have only one large computer games magazine, both Freespace (sold here as Descent: Freespace - the Great War) and Freespace 2 were familiar to all computer gamers, though not nearly all played them.
Just killing my time.

Either way putting an e-mail or a letter THQ's way to show there is demand may in fact push interest- it's worked quite recently with Vivendi in regard to their adventure licenses (and the rumour is Space Quest 7 is in development as a result of the letters they have recieved).
Exactly. Has anybody actually tried posing as a manager at some game development studio and sending an email to Interplay asking how much the rights would cost? Something along the lines of:quote: Hi, I'm a senior game developer at <insert name of studio>. We're in the initial stages of crafting a computer game in the space sim genre. We were wondering if the FreeSpace series, which Interplay currently owns the rights to, is currently in development or will be sometime in the future. If not, would Interplay be willing to sell the rights, and for approximately how much?
<yada, yada, yada>
A rough estimate of the cost of the rights would tell us whether FS3 will ever be in reach. Is it $10,000? Or $100,000? If I had to venture a guess, I'd lean towards the lower end of the spectrum. Interplay is obviously not making any money off the franchise right now, so the rights can't be very valuable. The company is also cash-strapped, so any sources of further income would be helpful to them.
One last thing. People keep mentioning that Interplay declined to sell the rights to Freespace to [V]. But do we really know how much effort [V] put into buying the rights in the first place?

This has been talked of over and over and over and over and over. Why is this brought up again?

Welll this is kind of bugging me Is Volition Doing anything or are they sitting on ther asses letting this chance go by!! this is our chance to get FS3 and we are almost doing nothing! not like we ourselves can do much but it would be nice to see some effort here because this is probaly the closesest we will ever get to getting this done!.. i mean we have always dreamed and thought bout it and always thought no there willl never be a FS3 but it might just happen i myself dought it unles volition gets there hands on this but if they dont well say goodbye to Free space cause we will never see another one created by volition again unless they some how make a new title and have it related to FS.
these are just some of my thoughts but i think it would be in everyones intrests if we could some how find out the costs for these rights for FS and maybe just maybe we can get this underway!

This has the real potential to turn into a flame thread, so this is last that I have to say here.
There have been COUNTLESS, literally countless threads about FS3 at [VBB], here, and over at HLP. Its pointless. [V] will not make FS3 because they dont have the rights to it, and they probably never will. I've learned to accept it, and to me, bringing this issue back is just gonna start a flame war. Yes the fans COULD write a "sequel to FS2", but who would write it? The point is, any sequel to FS2 is very unlikely. ST was a "fan-created" story, but that took a team of several dozen people to do it. I feel theres no point in discussing this. If FS3 ever comes out, hurray. But until that day comes, the theme will always be "There will not be a FS3." Period. This thread is pointless to even have been brought up. Its DEAD... its BEEN dead for two and a half months...
