Yes yes indeed.

I've rebuilt a couple of missions recently and they are much better than before.

I'm also working on some very covert op missions where assination is the name of the day. That and sneaking up on enemy capital ships.

I like the SOC missions where your pretending to be the enemy. Its neat cos you get a good medal for doing it.

Reminds me of a very old (not for FS) idea/thought I had, that.....(allow me to humour myself)

Basically, you and your wingmen are in some sort of heavy stealth / low visibility bomber, powered down to avoid sensors and hiding in a anasteroid field..... when an enemy ship arrives, you fire up everything and 'lightning strike' them..... I wonder if this could be translated into FS?

The gist was the tension of waiting, utter quiet as you wait for the target. could be neat.

That's something I had considered as well. It's certainly doable with sexps and the ships available...

just two things: I hate the "fight those twelve waves of fighters and bombers coming at your destroyer" kind of missions, and I don't like hunting bombs, otherwise anything is good if I don't have to play it 5 times to beat the damn mission

oooh, first time I post in this forum I believe...

I agree venom, either an all or nothing attack with a huge swarm of bombers not a wave rearm wave rearm wave rearm esque attack.

Probably the reason why I never released many missions for FS2 was because I loved trying to create new mission situations (like Shivan Incursion). Here are a few that I know work by sexp coding and enjoyed testing, but never finished to a point for release (damn real life, anyway):

Support for Marine Assault Force - a variant of escort, but you're defending a fast, light transport (GTT Hunter) in the middle of a battle trying to deliver troops to take over and capture a hostile capital ship.

Ghost Recon - a variant of recon, but your mission is to scan certain subsystems on a ship/installation WITHOUT getting spotted by fighter patrols. If you get into a firefight, then mission #2 gets much harder because enemy reinforcements arrive. You can lose, but it will hurt....

Capital Ship Retreat - protect a limping capital ship at 10% hull as it tries to escape. short mission, but VERY tense. The GTVA loses the battle, but YOU can still win by averting catastrophe.

I am also suprised how much people just love to dogfight. I lost count of how many times people replied to my first FS1 mission saying that they just loved dogfighting...without shields. Now THAT is old school!

Anyhow, keep up the good work! It's good to see ANY missions coming out, modding has come a long, long way (and those background nebula/planets are looking awesome!).

You mean like the Robotech episode Blitzkrieg? There the RDF waited in the shadow zone in the rings of Saturn and then jumped out and ambushed some Zentraedi(sp) forces. I tried doing a mission like that where you sneaked through an asteroid field, picking off patrols, and then jumped an enemy fleet. I didn't get to far with it though.

Despite the fact that this is somewhat meaningless due to the time zone variation, it just turned 2002 where I am so, happy new year.

Yes, happy new year.

I agree that waves of bombers are usually rather irritating. It also means that a player with any amount of experience can beat missions like that, because there are so few bombers. I only really use them for stalling, I hope.

Zarathud, nice to hear from you again! Would you mind if I tried out some of those missions to see how they come out? I've thought of the Marine Assault Force one before - basically as a way of involving the player in a huge battle without BOES, or overwhelming objectives. I particularly like the look of the Capship Retreat mission...

You see, I knew that it was a good idea to start up this thread. Now I have new ideas for missions, and they'll be what you want!

Nice to hear from everyone. Definately wave shooting is about as boring as it gets, unfortunately I think most of us have done it at one time or another. There are a few places where multiple waves work really well, but that is a rare occasion.

Zarathud, your different types of missions are definately good ones. I think we've got a few that are a bit like that...we'll see how it all fits together in terms of BWO because those are the more challenging to create.

I hate waves. i can't stand that anymore in fact. If you really need to, better make fighters "spawn" on death for some times, that way you'll have the feeling there's a damn lot of ships, you have a real long and intense fight, and it doesn't sounds like the enemy is so dumb it sends fighters in the siole purpose of seeing them beaten to hell.

I know instead of swarming my enemy with bombers, i'll only send 6 at a time. Wings were mainly used due to balance gameplay. Although i still dont like em.

Well, you have to approach wings like this.

1) A wing of four fighters that has 6 respawns that keeps jumping in close to your convoy is pretty bad. I've seen missions like that and while they give you targets to shoot at, it gives you little else.

2) In the same convoy mission, a wing that has 2 waves can be used to great effect in conjunction with several other wings that come in their own 2 waves or by themselves and so on. The crucial thing is the timing between waves and the timing of the waves in accordance with each other.

3) Waves are not bad, wave shooting is. Waves can be used to create many effects and provide gameplay challenge, not to mention sneaking around the ship limit (sort of) and creating a balance in your mission.

So waves aren't inherently bad and nobody should be scared of using them for fear of slander, but on the other hand, utter reliance on them and nothing else does not make an interesting mission.

I didn't like that one mission in Derelict, where you had to protect that medical ship from Loki drones, there must have been 4 respawns of 6 lokis, over and over and over..

We have none of that

We do have a number of story driven missions, but they should be interesting enough and short enough to keep all of your short attention spans going
