2.0 without voices, 2.1 WITH.
That way, everybody is happy.
I mean, really, after all this beauty our eyes behold, it seems our ears can wait.
Couple of reasons:
-Releasing sooner without voices (without meaning that bugs will be left) means that we get to play with it more, and make MORE campaigns.
-After playing through whatever missions there are, people will want campaigns. They will not have them though, if it is not released for the FREDders to begin working.
-After playing through the short campain in 1.1, I immediately installed (with problems) "Tale of EA JANUS". If asked to choose, I would choose Janus, because it was bigger, and it DIDN'T MATTER ONE BIT THAT THERE WERE NO JANUS VOICES.
-Face it, If we wanted voices we would want "BABYLON 5 RADIO", but eye candy is what TBP is about, so to cut a long story short.
I WANT PLAYABLE EYE CANDY. I AM HUNGRY.
Tell you what. Release it and have a microphone ready. You'll get all sorts of "Oh my god!" "How the hell did they do this!" "That is one pretty bitch! (Nial)!"
--> In the dire event that you would have to choose between a world without sound and a world without eyesight what would you choose ? (Yep, I thought so!!)
--> Your honours, ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I rest my case. Thank you for putting up with me.

Yes, Tale of EAS Janus was released bit too haste, leaving opening for mistakes, which I intend to fix (someday when I have time, mayby for second aniversary of Janus complement).
What comes to voices, thats bit hard thing. I dont know if there is enough voice acters and willingly do such project, some celebritys will also be hard nut to crack (Bester). And final and most reason I dont have space to put them up.
But if I someday get that space, I'll promise to try gather people for Janus voice acting.
[EDIT] Tale of EAS Janus 2nd campaign takes time, since I dont want to make same mistake I did with 1st, but I'll try to get Demo of 3-5 missions released soon as possible, meaning I'll FRED all possible time I have (with breaks, I'm not a machine).

It seems like people would favor an earlier release over voice acting at the moment. I can't make any executive decision but hopefully others on the team who can will read this and decide what to do.

yeah - we can "stub" the missions with the references to the voice files then release a voice pack at a later date

if you really need help
I offer my help in here, and although I'm almost 19 (woohoo) I could be that young pilot who just graduated and get's blown up in his second battle. Mind though that I have a european (dutch) accent.
Anyhow, me is just trying to help, let me know if I can do something for you guys.
By the way, I have some sound editing programs too (goldwave, wavesurfer and dbPoweramp) so I can tingle around with some sounds, if you need any help that is.
Just give me a shout, ok?

In terms of the questions above about releasing some stuff now and other stuff later....well let me address those for you guys so you know where we stand on the issue.
The topic of releasing stuff right now has been discussed with quite alot of contention and debate within our team. Ultimately, it has decided the current course of our project and that is this.
We are planning to make Release 2 a landmark release with which we will build expansions and ship packs ontop of it. Released in smaller numbers and in greater quantity than before. That means that we'll have a focus group of vessels that we'll release when completed. Since the majority of the art, assets, and abilities will be present with R2, the additions will just simply add on to the experience.
Some people may not understand why we have taking the big pack route and I'll explain why.
There are two reasons...the first is techical, the second is end user.
1) Technical: FreeSpace 2 has one unified table set, one set of data resources it calls apon when you start the game. The ships.tbl is not really extensible in a content way. It exists with the ships that it has inside of it...just like a word document contains your essay. You cannot simply just add another six essays into your present one and expect them to integrate together. That'd be rediculous (we'd be talking about the History of Mongolia in one and Corporate Media Conglomerates in another). In a better example, we cannot have ships.tbl followed by ships01.tbl and ships02.tbl. So whatever in there is law. IF, we were to release a single ship at a time, it'd either have to be VERY PRECISELY sequential in the order that people picked them up...or we would release only the table data for one ship and that would cause multiple versions of tables floating around with the inherent inconsistencies that would be present.
2) End user: This argument ties into the first. To expect users to be easily able to manipulate table data is tantamount to insanity. The majority (and not to disregard any skills present here) of end users do not have the technical skills or the interest to learn them to delve into the deeper elements of FreeSpace 2's structure. And nor should they. So they want new things to work and they should work. To faciliate that, we established that things would go out in big packs that would completely replace the old pack.
Having made the argument, smaller packs will be on the way. But they will not be individual ships by themselves and they will be designed to be added sequentially ontop of the old ones. So R2 will be followed by R2.1 and R2.2. Probably containing ships that we didn't have time for like the Warlock, Babylon 5, and others. The R3 milestone will be much less traumatic than the R2 one (which introduces many many changes).
So...that is why things are. Tell your friends if they ask.

Voice acting: If it would delay release, then by all means (if you want to) leave it out of initial R2 and do them later. Voice acting sure boosts the feel to a new level, but they aren't totally essential.

BlackSheep will probably hurt me, but this is probably going to be the case. We won't hold release on the matter I'd think...but we'll leave that to team consensus.
