Sisko?
God I hate the limits of Human languages... One runs into Finnish words all the time. Why don't they make out any new words? I know, recycling is a good thing, but are words really considered as high-activity waste? Sisssster...

Yes, I've seen the Two Towers.

Kurare... I think that's only a problem if you come from the
same language groups. i.e. the hindu-euro group for those
who speak european languages.

The results can be unintentionally hilarious - check out http://www.engrish.com for examples of either mistranslations or wholly inappropriate usage of words and phrases as names.

^_^

And now back to topic...

Hansioux, in case you did not know (which wouldn't surprise me at all), Finnish has very little to do with any of the European languages, i.e. Germanic (Swedish, English, German, Dutch) or Romanic (Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish) languages as a member of the Fenno-Ugrian (or something like that ) language family.

The problem is that we borrow words eagerly from other languages if we don't have a good word to be used instead... Reformations after reformations and some really hilarious results can be seen in texts in English or certain other languages .

But back to the topic: I've never seen a single episode of Star Trek (believe it or not!), so I'm not really the right person to say this, but Nemesis seemed and felt like a good sci-fi film in the few-minute ad I saw in the beginning of The Two Towers. The general outlook was, I'd guess, quite loyal to the spirit of the series, being somewhat clinic (where's the Master of Stains? He's supposed to spill his Coke onto the textures instead of drinking it...) yet slightly "overshot" at times. I know nothing of the plot, if someone *could* tell me something about it (especially if it's good as a gate to the universe of Star Trek) I'd be pleased. Time for a crusade...

Lightbulb Languages

If I remember correctly, Finnish is in the same family as Etruscan, Basque and some of the Trans-Ural and Siberian languages.

Some really odd features (from an outsider's perspective!) strange pronouns and conjugations.

Interestingly...

I once learnt how to say something pointless in Finnish - I can't remember exactly how it goes, but it translates as "I have enormous luminous lemming buttocks."

I'd have a go, but I feel I might offend some of our Finnish colleagues if I do, I can mangle English badly enough as it is, and that's my first langauge.
