IIRC they speak about a nuetron star on the spot of capella (somewhere, dont know where), so, no black hole. i once did a paper about black holes, (it`s in dutch, otherwise i would have maild it to you, ns33), but if they're would be one on that spot, it would give more problems then just the radiation!
another question, what would the rad levels inside a ship be, since they don`t appear to have any rad shielding, it would result in some problems to! and can someone smarter then me please calculate what the result would be of being exposed to background rad for a long period (starting at around 10 years or so)???cause thats just what will happen, the only thing directly caused by the supernova is that the ozon layer is gone because of nitrogen oxides. and for a planet like earth it will take 100 years to repair that.
and karajorma, i'm gonna read the paper later on. now, i'm just to tired.

FS ships must have quite thick radiation shielding. The have to be able to stand up to all kinds of radiation. If they weren`t built with heavy radiation shielding you could take them out fairly easily by exploding a nuke at a distance.
I also seem to remember something being said about the shielding systems on bombers also shielding the ship from the radiation from the bombs.

The best way to represent the protection offered by the sun's and the earth's own magnetic field is through sun flares. Every once in a while, these flares are large enough to disrupt earth. Satellites in orbit are affected by this electromagnetic radiation, but the poles divert this energy outward. As the reach the far side of the earth, they come back and magnetically affect the poles... NASA mad a short clip on this somewhere (if someone could find).
Did you know that the pyramids in Egypt actually TRAPS gamma and x-rays INSIDE the chambers? An explorer would be fried if he/she stayed inside for more than 7 hours. (Not sure how that was relevant though )

You got a link to a reputable source for that one? I find it hard to believe that any gamma or x-ray powerful enough to pass through several feet of stone would not be able to simply pass through to the other side.
Add to that the fact that no one mentioned this to me before I actually went inside the damn thing

It was on National Geographic Explorer two years back... the design of the thing somehow traps radiation (it might take a while to look for the source where I got that, but its out there somewhere).
And now we're starting to digress

Unfortunately that one was the best I could find. If someone does know one in more plain English I would be glad to see it too.
