Also
I have tried FreeSpace 2 with other games @ 1024x768x16, it is smoother, but still slow due to motherboard and there are graphic glitches.
with smoke, instead of nice clear white smoke, i get pink and completely disgusting smoke, it does put you off.

obviously you've never gotten the shaft from ATI.
yes, the hell.
Ati cards are prone to hardware-level lockups of computers (for what reason, novody knows). I stopped using my old Ati Rage Fury
1) because extensive D3D useafe (on any ATI card) made my system unstable
2) Constant lockups. The Same with an ATI Rage Fury Maxx, the same with a Radeon 8500.
When you've owned 3 products, all of which carry the same traits, you tend to develop a sour taste for that product. Not to mention ATI's support doesnt even match up to ass quality (which is pretty bad). There is a streak of headaches, and hearburn, and i thought it would be nice to spare someone else that.
The radeon 8500 is not the end-all do-all. The GF4 whomps it, IMHO, with no lockups, excellent support, AND DRIVERS THAT WORK ON WINDOWS 2000!

I don't know what type of system you were running or what the mix was or the combination, but I game all the time from Mechwarrior 4, Ultima Online 3D client, IL2 Sturmvick, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Freedom Force, Voyager: Elite Force on my Radeon 8500 and I can't remember the last time it locked up. I'm sure it did at some point in time...it's been on Windows 2000 Pro, Windows 98, and Windows XP Pro installations.
Yes, the Geforce 4 sure beats it. It better at 50%-100% the price.
The "over the top" tone of your message comes across like you have an axe to grind. I'll let you grind away and just leave my own very different experiences here to speak for themselves with only the final comment that I could just as easily find an "anti-Geforce" person with the same sort of axe to grind. I leave them alone and have let them grind away too. I don't think that any average user would do wrong with either card. I just personally like to spend my money on the 'underdog' as long as the product is at least as good as the competition in order to promote competition, which is good for all of us.
Hence I have a Guillemot Game Theatre XP instead of a Creative Audigy, an AMD Athlon XP 1900 instead of an Intel Pentium 4, and a Radeon 8500 instead of an Nvidian anything. I'm sure you think that at least one of those other parts is crap too and locks up all the time.
I wonder how I get these hours of gaming in during the weekends with full detail on...I must be dreaming them.

I don't think a Geforce 2 MX is going to cut the mustard. Sorry. You'll need about $125 for the Radeon 8500, which will. About twice that, or more, for a full featured Geforce 4.

Yes...your card cannot keep up with your processor or your RAM, it's a bottleneck.

hmmm.
right now, i could get my computer stuff at the end of this month.
If i decided to get an ATI Radeon or a GF4 Ti, it would take it to another 2-3 months.
hmmmm,
JamieK

As I'm pretty much a Windows idiot, I was wondering what the best Windows OS for gameplaying is. I have heard horror stories about WinXP, but then again I've heard some people who love it...
Is it still possible to get older WIndows OSes? I think I still have the Win98 CD somewhere, so that would work, but could I still get WinME or whatever if that's the consensus?
thx
=p=
Stop. Don't even THINK of putting Win9x (ME or 98) on a rig even half as powerful as what you're suggesting. Seriously running 9x on a rig like that is like owning a V12 Ferrari and never taking it out of second gear. Get XP.
