The subspace theory provided by Volition to explain interstellar travel is pretty facinating, and it seems to have several ties with the tachyon-space theory.
I agree that if, and note: IF, you could make your ship radiate at the same freqency as the one of tachyon-space, it could quite easily survive the journey to another star.
Maby it could even jump out and back into normal space at will (by just changing the frequency back to the one of n-space).
Shure it could be possible.
Another way to survive a journey through t-space is by turning the entire ship into a tachyon, but that is a very bad idea; as tachyons cant survive in normal space, and would end up in the core of a star.
I`m not a doc, or somethign like that, but I go for the first theory. Who knows? It might just be possible in the future, when we have enough power, stronger materials, and the power to change the frequency of a ship and possible bio-mather without killing everyone aboard that ship.
I wonder if Volition new what they where doing when tehy wrote the story of Freespace. I must admit that the Freespace "subspace" is a more complex theory then hyperspace, and have many simulareties to the very new tachyon-space theory.

Not to put [V] but I think they are better game designers than high energy astrophysists.

If find it hard to believe that anyone with the background needed to make such a detailed subspace theory could get basic facts wrong (Like capella being a multiple system and also unable to go supernova).

Most likely [V] pulled together subspace by mixing elements of other sci-fi stories together until they thought up something that sounded good. Like Star Trek warp theory, some one has later proved that there is mathmatical ground for it but that doesn`t mean that anyone knew that when they came up with it.

The Tachyon-space theory is about one and a half years old. But it was in development and discussion in 1997-98, the time when the original Freespace came. It might be that [V] picked up some of that theory and mixed it together with the hyperspace and wormhole theory.
Sure they did it to come up with a belivable sci-fi story, and I dont think they ever knew that their theory was close to what the physisists are now debating...

I`d say there are, of course, several things in the FS2 which aren`t real ( for example, it`s impossible to see a laser shot in vacuum , space nebulas aren`t dense, their density is lower than that of the vacuum, created in the laboratories on earth ( sometimes higher, but there are`nt many as dense as the FS2 nebula) , but it`s not important- a game strictly corresponding with the current science woudl be probably deadly boring.
And taychon theory...
sometimes I think the tome of the subspace travels may come just as the age of the planes - not so long ago people thought it wasn`t possible.

but if the Volition`s art of subspace travelling would be real, I wish there would be no Shivans.

What I worry about is not a Shivan-like race out there. We got our own dangerous race right here home; ourselfs. We are a real treath. "The shadow of Terra", one might say. Yes, I edited this after a "request" from Ashrak.

No, dear, that's plasma not a laser.

A laser is a source of light but unlike anything that had ever been seen or implemented before 1960 when Theodore H. Maiman of Hughes Aircraft mounted a specially prepared synthetic ruby rod inside a powerful flash lamp similar to the type used for high speed photography. (If you're into reading heavy scientific literature, the reference is: T. H. Maiman, "Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby", Nature, 6 Aug. 1960, vol. 187, no. 4736, pgs. 493-4.) When his flash lamp was activated, an intense pulse of red light burst forth from the end of the rod that was both monochromatic (a single color) and coherent (all of the waves were precisely in step). The difference between the output of a laser and that of an incandescent light bulb is like the difference between white noise and a single tone.

A laser cannot be seen in a vacuum. Since a laser is merely focused light, being in a vacuum will mean it will have nothing to bounce off. If it can't bounce, we can't see it.

Therefore it is impossible to see a laser in a vacuum.

Plasma on the other hand, is the 4th state of matter, and since it is ionised gas, usually super-heated, it is visible.

Star Wars 'lasers' are actually heavy plasma bolts, not real lasers.

Oh and, Ashrak: I have found out that Gaia is the name for the Earth-mother, and it is the astronomical name for Earth as well. So, Gaia realy isnt the name of the Earth soul like in the movie Final Fantasy (never saw it, just heard about it).
Gaia is the name for the Earth-goddess, she who created man and the other creatures on this world, according to some legend that I cant remember right now.

But sure, Earth is a planet of many names; Gaia, Terra, Tellus... er...
there was more names but I dont remember them right now.
