Thats correct. since the battle at Matok it became clear that a new ship is needed able to perform planetary bombardments. Simultaneously the ship should be able to stand a chance even against a Minbari Sharlin cruiser.

The Warlock project was started, but from the beginning on the main problem was they didn't possess the technology to realize such an ambitious project.
Things changed, however, when the EA got its hands on SHADOW technology, but the first Warlocks didn't go into service before the end of the Civil War.

Didn't go into service. Doesn't mean that there wasn't a prototype or two lurking about...

I believe the only working prototypes available at that time were the Omega-X's.. the Warlock's were maybe still in the oven.

And the ship in Gropos is the Schwartzkopf? I ask because I couldn't quite read the nameplate.. and it had a very identifyable "J" on the side in the CG... is this another error, or didn't they decide that the letter would be the initial of the ship until later?

I've seen a picture of the Schwartzkopf. There is a J at the bottom of the forward hull armor. I don't think the letter there always represents the name of the ship, but I don't know what it really does mean.

The two had nothing in common, other than the Shadow tech. The Omega-X's were thrown together at the last moment to battle Sheridan's advancing fleet. They were a purely stopgap measure, never intended to go into full production.

The Warlock eventually went into production, but without any Shadow tech.

According to JMS AND that website, the Warlock's did have shadow tech inside of them. No Shadow influenced weapons (technically) but some of its systems were no doubt much more advanced than anything else that Earth had. Plus Minbari influenced gravitic systems (apparently heavily adapted and modified for Earth use). Its a mishmash if you think about it

The Warlock is one hell of a ship in any case.

Operative word being "did". I've read elsewhere that when Clark's administration fell, the Shadow thralls destroyed all Shadow technology that they were assisting with. This is why Warlocks don't have Shadow bio-armor, among other things.

my opinion on the letters on the side of an Omega/Nova has to do with its fleet assignment, and not with its name. There have been many ships who's letter didnt match its name.

Yea, that's what I was thinking, but aren't fleets numbered? Sixth fleet, Third fleet, Task force 77, etc.

It could also denote honors the ship has earned. In Red Storm Rising the USS Pharris is instricted to paint a gold "A" on their ASROC launcher, after sinking one sub, and assisting on two more.
