Whee! Woo hoo? WOOHOO!

TBP members, I've been following your work and lurking about almost since you first announced your project, but I hadn't checked in for about six months.

Recently I got a GeForce 2, and last night I installed FS2 to see how pretty it would look. Played through the first several missions of the campaign, and was getting ready to uninstall the game, when I thought to check in here. Boy am I glad I did!!

You have done an *outstanding* job. I am simply amazed. I don't know what else to say but WOOHOO! And THANK YOU for all your hard work.

...guess what I'm gonna be doing for the next 10 hours or so ....

Well, it sounds good in france, but when youn compare it to the original... sometimes, of course, they have no choice, they're obliged to modify thinghs that can't be translated as is, but usually... OMG to resume.

Gags and playing with words are always difficult to translate... Sometimes they get lost, sometimes they invent new ones. That's why I like to watch the originals after having seen the dubbed versions...

About movie synchro: Still the most important thing is to make it feel like they are really speaking with the voiceover voice. It has to be credible. Another thing professionally dubbed movies can be recognized by is the transfer of the original soundmix configuration concerning 5.1 channels. If this is done right, you will realize those guys know what they are doing...

I think subtitle is better.

One important thing with action is to express emotion
with one's voice. And this emotion has to match the actors
body language (facial expression) as well.

I rather read to know the context and listen to get the emotion,
than only understanding the speech, but losing same of the
intended emotional impacts.

hmm... for example... I've watched south park in english,
french, and chinese... French and Chinese version are fine,
but it's just not as funny as it was intended. Not because
it's not done well, but some of the play with words stuff just
can't be translated.

for the same reason, I don't like watching anime in english....
(although Pokemon is a weird example, because the American
version is way better)

Southpark is a bad example... In Germany everybody who knows original Southpark is complaining about the synchro. Perhaps it's because they didn't expect many to watch, dunno.

But in my opinion, the emotional part doesn't get lost in the german dubbed versions of most movies. That is because nearly all speakers are professional movie/theatre actors and went to a acting school. They are really good in copying the expression of the original actors voices.

Btw: If I watch the original on DVD, I only sometimes have a look at the english subtitles... I hate it to read the subtitles most of the time and therefore missing half of the movie visually. I want to concentrate on the pictures with my eyes and on the sound with my ears. If my eyes have to do both jobs, the movie is not as much enjoyable as it was intended to be.

But I'm talking too much...

Ok, I've finally finished downloading with my 56K
and finished all the missions.

I think the game is great. and besides that NOVA model
error with one turret there's not much to complain on.

One of it is the backgorund of Battle of the Line... as many
people have talked about. Personally, I've never seen
any kind of nebula when I look up into the sky, so even though
it's very pretty, but I think we can at least do way with one of
the nebulae in table and put some fleet in to the action.

That's not a big problem, so ain't the next one.

I love the voice acting! Most of the time they are great.
With the exception of when pilots are requesting for help...
They sounds so calm... so relaxed... and slow....
Almost like the tone my roommate asks me to make him a
sandwich. When the context gets intense, voice actors should
speed up the pace (also raise the tone).

But it's not a big problem....

by the way.... how did you guys get the girls to do voice acting?
I have not met any girl that likes B5....

That's very true. But sometimes dubbing will just make things
worse. Like how I can't imagine Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
dubbed.... That'll be like watching a Shakespearian play in
Chinese... all that's poetic will be lost.

I grew up with subtitles in Taiwan, since lots of entertainment
comes from Japan and America. It doesn't bother me as much.
(by the way, watching Startrek in Chinese isn't the same as
watching it in English, eventhought it was very professional...
Resistance is futile doesn't sound as intense in the chinese
language)

Think of "Resistance is futile!" as "Widerstand ist zwecklos!"... Well I can live with it, but your right in some points. However: If I'm gonna watch CT HD, I'll gonna do this in german. I don't speak chinese... As the english version is not the original that's really OK, I think. I simply don't want to loose the pictures. Important for CT HD, I think.

Has anyone of you heard the B5 season 4 titles in german, listen to those and then say that dubbing doesn't matter.

pera... thanks for proving my point :P

Let's put things in perspective.

Dubbing will be OK if done well.
however, even when done well somethings will be lost
and lost forever.

Where as subtitles done well is also OK.
But the lost of visual can be made up by watching it again.

3 things for those concerned about flaws:

Clicking on the weapons-tab in the techroom only crashed my game (maybe that got mentioned elsewhere, I don't know).

If you left-click the mission briefing icons in FS2 you usually see a rotating models of the shipclass the icons stand for. In the B5 missions I looked at so far, the designers didn't set the correct ships, so instead of Hyperions, Auroras, etc. there is most of the time the (maybe generic) ATMShuttle.

There is a checkbox in Fred2s ships-editor under "Inital Status" that removes the shields from the currently selected ship. That should also remove the 3rd energy bar from the Hud. I would recommend the use of that feature in future missions.

Concerning that mp3: Quality could have been better... On TV the voices sound smother...

If you get to know the actors with the dubbed voices from the beginning, you won't have any problems with it at all... The feeling is still great to me. It always gives me the creeps when listening to it.

However, I think it will get better when DVD will be the only video medium... No more double buying to get the original and the dubbed version and a subtitled version or whatever. All this is on a DVD. Problem solved!

PS: As I read, the fighter craft in tbp have 10 shield points as a protection from shockwaves... don't know if your hint would work then.

Sorry I took so long to reply, Ice - I was buried under a mountain of English language work - but I'll be happy to go over the text for you and fix it up. I won't change the words because the voice acting is all there and all good, just do corrections...

I might also do a couple of missions, though they'd likely be single - UNLESS somebody wants to do a collaborative campaign that's not been covered yet (hint, hint)

Oh, and I'm up for voice acting too if you need me. I do English, fairly obviously - mid/southern accent. I can do some impressions of Russian, possibly American, but they're probably crap - you always overestimate how good you are.

a 1 second to shoot like 20 beams at you....

There's no escape once there's a nial behind your tail...
The only way I can think of is.... HIDE!!! As far as possible.
Especially in level 3.... there's so many of them....
