hey, if the player is defending his ships against fighters, and is then ordered to attack an enemy capital ship to take out its beam turrets. and then a battle group jumps in behind the players capship formation and decimates them while he was gone, well, that wasn't the players fault, and should be reflected in the players mission goals by classing the defend goal as completed at the point in time where the player is ordered to attack. presto, the player, following orders and completing his mission goals successfully, has lost.

I think this poll is useless. The best way would be to do as much different mission types as possible! More fun this way

Angry Stupid Alpha 1 hating

I find it hard to belive your actually debating Alpha 1 being so powerful.

Dont be dum. Think about it. In REAL life, your Star Pilot career ended at Mission two or whatever of the FS1 Or FS2 Camapaign.

As alpha one you are:

Completly Fearless, since yove died a million times before.
Aware how the mission plays out, so you can go get things quick.
The AI are playing it for the first time every time, and in those terms they arnt doing so bad.
If after the first time you died Interplay had snatched your copy of FS away, youd be a crappy pilot. No two ways about it. Were only as good as we are cos weve "trained" for years.
Dont give me gumpf about "the GTVA would have traing sims" etc either.

The fact is in order to combat your unatural flying behavior and style the only way is to make missions hard. Thats why flying online is bizare, everyones a pro. In comes a newbie "who is used to taking on a wing of shivans and coming out tops" sudenly finds hes on his 10th respawn.....

As kellan said, itd be best if you got sucked through to the next mission if you mess it up, therby staling the oppurtunity to practise that particular mission. Next mission could then be harder, so you have a real and present danger of ending up on impossibly hard missions in the campaign.

Thatd make Super Alpha 1 think twice maybe.

How about a mission in which you escort a wing of bombers? I hardly see that. Either you are the one flying the bomber, or a capship jumps in to provide fire support. I liked the Awakenings mission in which the PVD Hammer jump in and Command says,"Alpha, we are deploying bombers to attack the Hammer. Your job is to cover them."

If the bombers die, you fail the mission, even if you take out the ship yourself later.

Hehe, i will like to see a Realy good assualt mission with a missile with the "electronics" flag enabled.

My Weapons:

Trident = Temest variant (looks simular to the FS1 fury) with the electronics flag enabled.

MDC = Mass driver cannon, this uses a bullet pof file in the primary section. it has $TAG: enabled aswell, the story is that it temperarly changes the frequency of the shields so that they can be detected by standard detection arrays.

I am also thinking about makeing a primary weapon with the emp tag enabled.

I just had an idea for a new missile weapon, a TAG and ELECTRONICS weapon. activly dissables and Tags fighters and bombers so capital ships can destroy them with ease.

"electronics" tag?

Would you be refering to the old Disabler missile, EMP, or Leech?

I would like to see a mission where you are used to support a large capital ship atacking another cap ship. It is a mission where your being there isn't vital to the mission but thing could come up where you have to react (eg. the sudden arrival of lots of slow moving bombers). It's sort of a offencive/defencive mission.

Recon missions are supposed to be boring but there is usually a 100% chance of something deciding that just had to pop up on your patrol. If I was part of GTVA command I would lock up Alpha 1 because nearly everything happens around him/her.

Hah...very true.

I've got at least one bomber escort mission pencilled in, and one subspace mission, which Shrike is handling. As for recon...well, we have the opportunity to do a couple of those too - in fact, I have one planned. The recon and bomber escort missions are the ones I'm constructing now.

Oooh...I'm in a mission-making mood again!

The best type of mission is as follows :

A moderate sized battle (oh come on, alpha vs shiva aint fun at all). YOUR side starts losing - horribly. Cap ships are dropping like flies. The most important cap ship there, say a colossus, is being pounded and pounded, and no one is there to support it.
An enemy super cap ship jump ins, presumably for the kill. All enemy attacks have broken off, making way for the super capship to finish the job. As its powering up it's weapons.....a backup assault force jumps in inbetween the two ships! The enemy beams fire, hitting the assault force, some ships are destroyed, but the colossus lives. Everyone starts to move around in position, fighters and bombers are launched, and the tides are turned. The shivans are being massively pwned. Beam volley after beam volley, the enemy cap ships are going down. They try to escape, but to no avail.

The battle is won

and I bump this because it's good feedback for the BWO mission designers.
