Neptune's atmosphere is 85% hydrogen, 13% helium and 2% methane.

as i have said in the past, you can't apply logic to what the military does. it just doesn't work out very well unless you understand the objectives.

first, neptune has no surface! it is a gas giant! any installations would have to either be in orbit or on one of its moons. second, while it is an excellant choice for a refueling/fuel refinery, this advantage makes it a poor choice for a military research and testing facility.

pluto, and its moon charon are much better choices. they are isolated, maybe not from intersystem jumps, but a shoot first ask questions later policy will take care of that REAL quick. second, the planet is STABLE. the current theory is that it is a lump of rock, which means that you do not have to worry about the planet screwing up your data. it the planet is also supposed to have an extremally low gravity, so, that means that you can actually have you shipyard on the planets surface. all you would need to get the sips off would be a small set of boosters or maybe just a couple of tugs.

i am not saying that this would be a major fleet base, just a place were research can be performed without bothering anyone else. there would be research facilities, testing facilities, small productions facilities, and a small shipyard. this woul allow limited production runs for advanced craft like the Ares and the eryines when the were in their first stage of testing and deployment, and for prototypes.

neptune, do to its location and strategic value, would most likely have a full military as well as civilian presence.

well, neptune ,i believe or it maybe saturn, has a moon named Triton. Triton is of fair size, it's not the size of earth but it is pretty big and has 12.46 psi for an atmospheric pressure, plus the nitrogen base and oxyen and water to go with it. Only reason there is no life on it...IT IS -200 DEGREES *F!!!! SO we can't live on it.

Unless they fixed that little problem.

Triton is a moon of Neptune. It seems to have a fairly active geology - geysers and such. So the military would have to choose between setting up on a nice, quiet moon (like Nereid or Proteus) and a moon with a certain amount of valuable raw materials (like nitrogen) that might explode in your face.

More than you ever wanted to know about Triton: http://www.solarviews.com/eng/triton.htm

Saturn as Titan, which is fairly large as moons come. Its got its own atmosphere and I think its own polar magnetic fields. I think one report I read said that in the future (several thousand years), the conditions on Triton would be favorable for life.

If you liked -200 odd degree temperatures that freeze nitrogen and you love methane swamps, I'm sure Titan is just right for you.

Proximity to the sun is only part of the reason planets are hot. Atmosphere is a much bigger one. That's why the moon is so cold yet isn't any further away from the sun than we are. If Titan has an atmosphere, it could warm up enough to support human life, maybe. I'm not on NASA's payroll or anything so I could be wrong. But then again, I seriously doubt anyone else here is either.

Insulation, yes. But there's so much less energy coming from the sun out there that it can only keep those low temps.

triton is actually one of the better spots in the solar system to set up a colony. it actually has an atmosphere, witch would allow for much simpler habitats, but the most important reason is that its atmosphere is almost completly hydrogen. inother words. all the fuel you could ever want is sitting right there. all you have to do is add an oxygenator.

Lightbulb

an oxy generator is true, as you can create water with that sort of equipment, through some process where you burn oxygen and hydrogen together, and they create water (i think) therefore, water is life and an amatur terraformer is born!

Don't ask me too many Q's i may have studied my chemicals and elements but i don't know everything.

Even if Triton is so far from the Sun, it's atmosphere can set him warm in some years to come, due to the fact that the atmosphere can retain 80% of the Heat that enters the planet...

Also, I think that I know what Icefire means in terms that Neptune is excellent for sensor data: Neptune has an excentric orbit, this orbit even crosses Pluto's orbit, but these two will never colide...

Just because it's a gas giant doesn't mean it has no surface. As far as I know, all gas giants have surfaces. The fact of the surface being situated beneath thousands of miles of the worst atmospheric environment imaginable to man doesn't mean that it ain't there.

1) The solar system, after 4.6 billion years has come to thermal equilibria. Titan is not going to get any warmer due to natural, expected phonomena. It's got an atmosphere, it's also colder than any place on Earth.

2) You got that backwards. Pluto has the excentric orbit, not Neptune. (although technically all planets have excentric orbits, it's normally very small)

actually, neptune really doesn't have a surface, or crust in this case. instead it goes from the atmoshere to the mantle to the core.

and when i said oxygenator, i meant a source os oxygen, not an oxygen generator.

as for pluto being a lost moon of neptune, yeah right. i buy the thory that it is an extremally large asteroid captured by the sun, but not a lost moon. i mean, how on earth can you explain something like that?

It's probably more akin to a very large Kuiper belt object, having a good fraction of various ices.

Gas giants go from gas to gas to realy high presure gas to liquidlike gas to metal like gas to a tinychunk of carbon compressed at the core. the changes in the gas that makes up the planet is due to presure, so there is no surface just gas that gets denser and denser.

Wouldn't there have to be something for the gas to collect around. I mean originally there would have had to be something with enough gravity to pull it all in wouldn't there. Something like a large asteroid or something.
