Yeah but you have to admit some of the mistakes Command made with it were pretty galling.

I agree 100% Command didn`t have the faintest clue how to use the Colossus when alpha 1 was around. (Strangely enough without him they managed to crush the NTF in under a month using it)

I figured out why the Colossus' pivot point is in the back with the engines!!

It's so the explosion starts there and propagates in one direction across the entire length, instead of starting in the middle and going in two directions. Makes it much more dramatic.

The Reason why it sucked so much ass was to keep up gameplay. The game wouldn't really be all that fun to be played if the C was used logically (launching 200 fighters at the Sath while they duke it out) that and any normal mans computer would die

I admit though, a lot of really really stupid stuff could have just been avoided all together, like making it a diversion in the last mission.

Yeah, it didnt take much for it to go down. I remeber diverting all power to engines, and having my afterburners on full blast when i saw it jump in. Still couldnt get there.... So i guess it did add an extra level of dramatisim

I may have a possible explanation for that. You see, the Colossus has this REALLY tiny triangle hole through which ships launch and stuff (this is fact). I don't have hard facts, but I'll guess it's about 30mx30mx50m. Formations of fighters, some of them with dimensions around, say, 18mx10mx8m, are supposed to be able to get through that little hole.

It doesn't matter how big your fighter bay is, the Colossus' crew soon learned, if you're launch door won't permit five or six plankton particles to go through at once.

Well, you have to give them credit for trying. All 150 fighter wings on board the Colossus launched simultaneously, slamming into each other in a tragic, abhorrently violent and explosive pardoy of the Three Stooges. Only no one was laughing, save a couple of crazy Vasudans who were quickly consumed by the chaotic flames. The resulting inferno wiped out the Colossus' fighter complement, and with it went any hope of not pissing the player off.

Furthermore, the catastrophe in the fighter bay weakened the Colossus from within, damaging several areas of the ship in such a manner that it would take "several months" to "fully repair the Colossus". Command wrote it off as damage from the Shivans so as not to disgrace the memory of those 150 x 3 = 450 idiots who tried to make it out that little hole.

Knowing Alpha 1 was going to get rather testy when those 150 fighter wings didn't show up, and too afraid to tell him/her that they definitely WEREN'T coming, the Colossus comm guy started speaking in desperate, pleading tones as to distract the player. An ingenious weapons officer on board the Colossus was able to route the force of the explosion out through the beam cannons, channeling that moronic destructive energy into the Sathanas while the comm guy claimed the reactors were "giving it all we've got!" The weapons officer later died of radiation poisoning.

And in the end, Alpha 1 came out a hero, despite the aforementioned setbacks. Sure, he/she was chastised in debriefing, told that had they acted faster the Colossus wouldn't have taken as much damage. Oblivious to the fact that the big C was mysteriously short 150 fighter wings and knowing all too well the Sathanas never got off a shot, you simply nodded your head. Nodded your head.

At least that's what the design diary on the FS2 homepage says.

It took me a while to work out how to take out all four cannons in the one mission. The thing that threw me for a while was the fact that you have to be more or less next to or diagonal to them in order to get target lock. If you are behind them you'll keep trying to attain weapons lock but never make it.

The second part of destroying all the cannons is realising you have to call in support as you are lining up the second cannon. If you don't you won't have enough ammo otherwise.

Has anyone managed to complete the secondary objective by taking out the forward flak turrets?

Bingo. That's why the new carrier classes (Inferno) have launch bays big enough to hold a cruiser.

Yep. They're very weak, so a couple of Trebs'll handle them. And I always called in a support ship just before the mission started. That way you waste no time in burning straight towards the Sathanas. There is a bonus too, an LRed somewhere, but I never managed to hit it.

Just a quick theory, but did the briefing say that the Colossus holds or can hold 150 wings? If the latter, I guess command might just have forgotten to stock it up.

The Colossus is the most powerful space faring warship ever constructed. Spanning six kilometres from bow to stern the Colossus has taken over twenty years to complete. Twelve Lucifer class destroyers can fit within its massive hull. Its state of the art weaponry includes, forty-five laser turrets, fifteen flack guns, twelve missile batteries and twelve beam cannons. The Colossus wields more firepower than twelve Orion class destroyers combined. Sixty fighter and bomber wings are housed in its vast hanger, and its crew numbers over thirty thousand.

Hopefully that should clear things up It does say are housed so I guess they were in there. Then again they could have been wiped out while the colossus was busy fighting the NTF. You know how quickly wingmen go through ships (especially when Alpha 1 isn`t there to bail them out).
