This is indeed very strange. I have solved the problem but for whatever undetermined reason, its your fault that its crashing

Let me explain. Apparently the p_dark8 planet image is indeed referenced in the game. I had absolutely no idea that it was added (or that it was perhaps there from the start). Since no planets to my knowledge were included in the demo I just didn't include them. When I put the demo together, I used exactly the same tables and effects present (in an entirely separate data directory).

Now....in the countless tests conducted by myself, members of the team, and a small beta tester cadre, none of them experienced the "green square of doom" so I was totally mystified when you guys had the trouble.

So...obviously its your fault that its crashing ( ). Let me decide what the best fix is and I'll get around to it.

I'd love to know what sort of video cards you guys are using and why FreeSpace would crash and whatnot for you guys and not the others (or myself). 3DFX cards perhaps?

Oh the shame...
Yep Voodoo 5 AGP.
But why does it only crash when the gas miners arrive?

Mysteries of the FreeSpace 2 engine. I've had bizzar crashes created by me (through table editing) but that didn't show up for days.

But the 3DFX cards and Glide just absolutely hate the background images for some reason. You can't do transparencies in the textures either...it comes out all green.

THAT IS TOTALLY UNFAIR.

Listen, I also have a V3000 and the same problem. But hey, our card is DEAD, BURIED and not bloody likely to ever come back either.

SO, either get a new card, or go play Unknown Enemy ( wcnews.com and find it from there ) where Voodoo rules (in Wing Commander Prophecy engine games.)

Voodoo is dead. Now, devs can either treat us like long lost forgotten "single" aunts or get on with it and make something for all others to enjoy.

I for one, even if I own a Voodoo, like the fact that they DON'T support it. That means 512*512 textures, transparency, Freespace 3.6+ later versions, you name it. If that means NO VOODOO, so be it!!

Seems comrade, we 're as dead as the Soviet Union.

You, however, are TOTALLY WRONG. They worked hard on this, tried and made a short campaign that would make any dev proud, gave it to you for free and you come here making accusations?

Wrong, wrong and wrong.

Absaloutly, the Voodo has gone the way of the Dodo. I'm just glad we've identified the problem so when I lay me hands on enough funds I can get a new vid card.

The demo was top notch, BWO is a fantastic project and when it's done I'll be waiting eagerly (with or without a new card) to try and play it.

I thought Zaxzon' s comment was made in jest, give him the benefit of the doubt. Cut him a little slack before you jump down his throat.

Whee!

It was intended as a joke and there is no intended malice in that post. I enjoyed the demo and cannot wait for the campaign to be finished. I have been well aware for sometime that Voodoo is out of business, I was not aware that the card could have problems of this nature with FS2. Where does it look like I am making accusations? I do not really see it. I have been trying to figure out this problem for a while and Icefire has been kind enough to take some time out to help me out. I am glad that it is a simple hadware issue and nothing more. So, peace be with you and have a nice day.

Whee! OOPS!

A case of erroneous defense, your honour.

Well, after having a little dusted ego drop, I must say with all due haste:

NO HARM, NO FOUL.

Zaxson, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!!!

I have a voodoo 2 (dinosaur that it is) on the pc I run freespace on so it certainly seems that thats the problem.

I got a question for GT-Keravnos tho. You mentioned wing commander prophecy which I got but my voodoo 2 always crashes it and I have to use the software mode. It seems to be a problem with the video/voice compatibility because it only happens when a squad mate is talking.

Just curious did you mean to say voodoo works well with wing commander, or were you being sarcastic?

Oh and any solutions to the above problem would be appreciated. Sorry to clutter the BWO board with this, btw.

Rand
