And wasn't it that OUR First Ones (I mean the Vorlons here) were really scared of those coming fron another dimension? By opening the gate they released a monster they were powerless to stop so they damaged the gate thus closing the gateway but some separatists (those 'posessed' by the aliens from another dimension... They all were telepathic, right?) managed to hide the gate to hyperspace before it was destroyed.

Perhaps Sheridan (John) had found that the Vorlons and the Shadows were just telepathic cowards with a few nasty tech innovations; they were like our old people, useless, resource-consuming and annoying voices of the Truth . (Of course I don't really think this way of older people.)

Anyway, I got the feeling that the actual First Ones (those who came before the Vorlons and the Shadows) were all of the same people of which Lorien was the first. They all evolved according to their own taste, immortals as "test versions" created by the young universe. When the Next Ones (Vorlons, Shadows) came and started finally to argue about the ways of bringing up Younger Races the First ones were already tired of the universe, immeasurably old and proud in their wisdom. They decided not to take part in the gang battles of the Young so they retired to distant places to take a very long nap. Lorien was the only one mentioned by name in the show (in addition to Kosh, "We all are Kosh" ), the rest were more or less named after their holiday resort or appearence, such as the Walkers of Sigma957.

It would be really nice if Straczynski and the script writers had written a series of books about the world they had created and published it the same way with Tolkien... We'd all be much happier since the TV-series gives only a faint guess of what the world of Babylon 5 really consisted of in the minds of its creators.

I really should learn to be brief .

I think that one onboard the copernicus was just a minion race.
It looked different from the Shadows seen on Za'ha'dum.

And the Firstones are different races! When the Whitstar found the last of them, Lorien said, that this race is nearly as old as the Vorlons.

But I agree, that the Vorlons, Shadows (and the one mentioned above) are so to say the "Middle Ones" and we are the latest ones .

It was most likely a different species.
1) Sheridan killed, or at least wounded Shadows with his PPG on Zha'Dum, this thing took a lot more firepower to kill.
2) The shadows very seldom fight thier own battles, even when not using intermediaries, they are not likely to place themselves in danger.
3) This thing was there for over a thousand years, if it was an honest-to-goodness Shadow, I think they would have picked it up. You don't leave a firstone behind, that's why you have cannon fodder.
