I grew up on Wing Commander (no seriously). So protecting wingmen was a way of life.

Generally they are dead by the end of the mission anyway so I don't really care about them, and it always seem alpha2 bites the dust first.

well....
I try to keep them alive. many missions are really difficult if the wingmen died. it`s also safer when they cover you.
Usually if one of them is getting red I order them to warp out, especially if they`re really on the edge.
I must also admit I feel ugly hearing their screams as they go down in flames. I try to cover them and I feel defeated when they die anyway, although I know very well they`re just AI pilots.

I usaully try to keep them alive, but if the mission is particularly difficult, I go and let them take the heat =\
I have a friend (he must've been either insanely good or lying, and I think he really was that good) and he told me that he usually sent his wingman away right away and do the mission alone...

I do that sometimes. You get more kills/quicker promotion that way. Your friedn wasn't lying, he was playing on easy.

In FS1, I actually cared about my wingmen because they actually have a good chance of surviving the mission. Plus, I always order them to form up after every wave of Vasudan/Shivan fighters, and I always order them to jump out before I do.
But, in FS2, "snub fighters" are virtually useless. With a cap ship in almost every engagement, and with flak and beam cannons, my wingmen eat vacuum every time five minutes into the mission, so I say screw'em.
And on bombing missions?
Petrarch: Pilot, where's your wingmen?!
Me: Wingmen? What wingmen? (blinks) What, you actually expected the rest of the squad to come back?!
Well, that's my $.02.

It's so true. Bearbaiting would be so easy if you had human copilots...
"I'll take the top left. Alpha 2, take the top right. 3, 4, you've got the bottom ones." "Got it."
Mission is done in thirty seconds. Flak guns and the bonus turret too, if you're lucky.
