Can't you edit the camera so that it doesn't ignore parts of the model by using the source code?

Depends on whether or not the team wants to do it or not

It doesn't always takes to much of the view.
In the Starfurys (especially the Aurora) and the Nial you have only some poles (thanks to my blessed translation booklet ) in sight and a console.
But with the 'Furys there would be another problem: The console would be under the radar. So it would be nessecary to place the radar somewhere else.

you could also modify the rader to take up less space an occupy part of the console.

That was present on wing commander Prophecy too, yuck...
Looks strange and caused desorientation because it interfers with the perception of the turn manuevers, the frames dances all over the cockpit... I dont like it. I actualy flown aircraft and even though I made turns over at 4 g's my head was firm in place.
It would sufice to have a different visual intrument setup and perhaps some very simple 2d form of cockpit framework done.
Speaking of wich, cockipt reflection like in falcon 4 could aid to the sense of different pit geometry (depth and partial reflection from the not visible layout)
