Hell?

THe Radeon 8500 can be had for $100-$150 US dollars. That's the best dollar value out there. I don't have a single game that it doesn't work with. Not sure what kind of "hell" that is...if you've been to the Radeon boards yes there are people that nitpick every little feature and every game, but I could get you a forum with the same treatment done to Geforce.

The Radeon 8500 spanks the Geforce 3. It doesn't catch up to the Geforce 4, except the MXs, but it's not in their price range either.

But, JamieK, it sounds like to me you need one of those, another 256Megs of RAM and a fresh Windows install. I wouldn't upgrade MB or processor yet.

Trust me, it is probably a motherboard problem.

but since i am upgrading something, i might as well upgrade everything. lol

i have changed alot of stuff:

AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (1.40 GHz) Palomino Core

Asus A7V-333 viaKT333 + USB2 + ATA133

512Mb PC2100 DDR Memory

that is really cheap.

i currently have a GF2 MX-400, which is really good enough for now.

What do you think?????

Also again,

and another note.

if it was the newer games that i was having a problem with, i would understand that it needs more memory and thats it.

But i have major slowdown problems when trying to play FreeSpace 2 @ 1024x768x32 with the following system:

AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz 266Mhz
ASUS A7M266 266Mhz
256MB DDR PC2100 (266Mhz)
GeForce 2 MX-400 32MB AGP 4x

Should i get this problem with FreeSpace 2?

I can get it smooth with my Voodoo 5 5500 AGP.....but with that, hardly anything else works. lol

So with the upgrades, i should get better performance especially with the Athlon XP with WinXP.

if the new stuff work well, i plan to get a GF4 Ti or a Radeon, but not sure.

With a 32MB card and running at 1024x768 with 32bit color. YES...slowdown will happen.

Take it down to 16bit color and things will be fine.

so, not even having a super computer and still having a 32MB card i will still have major slowdowns at 1024x768x32 ????

I don't think 32MB cards existed when FreeSpace 2 was released, if they did, they must have cost a fortune.

slowdown

WOW, i cant believe that.
Im running an AMD k/6 200mhz mmx
Win 98
96 mb ram(edo)
32mb Nvidia TNT2 M64 graphics card.
10g h/d
directx 8.1
and the latest detonator drivers
40x CDROM

And i dont have a problem with my FS2 its not slow at all. The only problem ive ever had is on the video, and that is that the sound stops every few seconds (for a few tenths of a second)and then continues from where it left off. Not sure why this is? maybe my sound card, or maybe the read-ahead(set to maximum). The same happened on FS1 on the vid scenes, so it must be something to do with the sound or the CD, cos the video plays perfect.

Oh one question, why was there no video on Silent Threat?

Angry

Jamie,

nForce boards did not live up to their expectations on paper. They were delayed tremendously, possibly if they had come out on time they would have beaten the VIA boards of that time frame.

Now everyone's buying the KT333 Via chip boards. There's a string of reviews on anandtech, tomshardware, amdmb and more. (all those are standard com web addresses.)

I personally chose the Epox 8K3A+ because it's at the top of its pack in each web site's performance tests. The other boards might be at the top of one, but at the bottom of another...

good luck.

Also

I have tried FreeSpace 2 with other games @ 1024x768x16, it is smoother, but still slow due to motherboard and there are graphic glitches.

with smoke, instead of nice clear white smoke, i get pink and completely disgusting smoke, it does put you off.
