Humm.
I was blowing up some Herc IIs while testing this out; can someone else look and confirm for me the debris is totally untextured? It was a pile of flat grey polys on my end, I'd like to know if this is just me or if someone else sees it. Either way, that was ugly.
The explosions are pretty. It makes the EA Venom (think like the Inferno missile) look VERY nice in TBP. (I won't gloat about fiddling with an EA Omega destroyer )
I didn't have a chance to look at the beam effect that closely, but it's pretty cool.
What I honestly like is the shield effect. Instead of just glowing blue, they glowed red over the shield blue when I hit them with my HL-7s (which as you know are a reddish-color bolt) ... that's pretty slick.
Also, the lead-indicator or whatever, it's this whatever-your- HUD-color circle that changes shape depending on whether you're in guns/missiles/both range...wtf?
It's not the centered aiming reticle, and it's not a lead indicator since it just kinda floats around ... what is it, and why is it there? It strikes me as a distraction (and IMO none too pretty)
Thunder's screenshots don't have it, I'll upload it if you guys need me to, but just test the latest version. You'll see what I mean the instant you target something and have this big bulls-eye looking thing floating around in your HUD.
I haven't tried the new missile thing (nobody shot missiles at me, and I even waited for a Herc to try and pop one off...lamer) but the concept of painting a bright circle around incoming missiles sounds cool.
Overall, I like the new explosions, and the new shield-hit animations. I don't like this whack-ass floats-in-my-HUD thing. And it'll probably keep me from using it, it's that annoying. I can't comment on the beam effects just yet. Let me go test a mission with lots of beam combat, and I'll get back to you.
