I still boot up my amiga (or an emulator) from time to time to use that starchart. I`m not certain about it not inventing stars but the ones within about 40LY seem to be correct.

quote: There have been so many nodemaps released, and after studing them, NONE are accurate to the original nodemap released for FS1. Sure Icefire has made some great maps, but all of them have either missing important systems, or important jump nodes, or sometimes are MISSING jump nodes. Its hard to just FIND the one accurate map...
Find me the mistake and I'll fix it. But im pretty sure that after several changes to the current edition its spot on with the official one that Adam Pletcher released in 1998 + the systems that I've added for Warzone, Derelict, and others.

I remember that there was some nodemap made for Freespace 1 a while back and that one definiteley showed the jump to Sol. But I'm not sure that the Gamma Draconis and other FS2 systems are on it. I'll post a link as soon as I find it.

This one is from Volition. Of course there is a jump to Sol, but we all know that it has been disrupted and Earth cut off from the rest of the Alliance. Gamma Draconis is on this map, as is Epsilon Pegasi but they are not named here.

But even that Volitions map isn't completely compatible with freespace 1. For example Sol system actually had 3 Jump Nodes instead of just one and the Lucifer headed to Sol from Sirius with only one jump directly to Delta Serpentis from where it Jumped to subspace and was chaced down by GTA ( and PVE) fighters. Also it's a bit uncertain according to any map how the Shivans iniated their attack from Ross 128 as there's no Jumpnode to non GTA or PVE space (you can ofcourse take derelict campaigns explanation of shivans summoning a Subspace portal from subspace). I'd propably still use the map from Black Water ops because it's the biggest and you can see that the system you might invent isn't already in use.
That was some heavy writing, propably my longest answer..

Alpha Centauri is the closest to Sol. The node map doesn't show where the stars actually are in relation to each other. It is laid out in a way where you can see what's connected to what fairly easily.

2D 3D
Note how the in the FS2 maps, the jump nodes themselves are spaced evenly around the systems, theres a point nearest from one system to another, and its linked. The difference with the FS1 map you'll notice is that the nodes themselves may be situated on the other side of the system that it is connected to. That's because one is 2D and the other is 3D.
In the 3D ones, the jump may look short, but it may be longer than one of the shortest jumps.

And the answer to that is that the CB animations were done before the story was finished and thus the 3 jump nodes aren't officially there.
The only contradiction is a non-descript CB animation...so its not a major problem.
With Ross128 I think the best description from Volition (that we can imply on this question) is that Shivan subspace tech is just that much better than ours. The node may be far too unstable for a Terran/Vasudan ship to even consider traveling....maybe even not detectable.
