Yeah, but your still shooting stuff exactly the same as in the campaigns.
It really should give you points for kills in stand alone missions, as long as you havent altered them to give yourself 10000points for killing a basilisk.

About 20 seconds in the campaign editor allows you to write little 1 mission campaigns around those missons allowing you to gain points for them.

I got Lt Commander after the third main campaign, but there was one I got commander really fast.
Well if you really desire the points, you can always make a little campaign which will give you 20,000 for every fighter shoot down and so on but I don`t think it`s fair.

I was a leutnenant, untill i lost all my points, medals, and kills... for jumping out early too many times - i just wanted to go back to the breifing to change my loadout! Thank god that was just my test pilot, i have another pilot i play campaigns with, he's got all the medals and about 1000 kills.
Note: if someone could make (or has made) a mod so that you can go back to the briefing from the pause screen, not just restart or quite. Thanks.

When you guys are saying "you must play the campaign again" does that mean restarting after the campaign is done? I thought that resets everything to zero.

Restarting a campaign does not reset your player's score. For instance, you can keep an eye on how many shots you fired so far, both with lasers and missiles, how many kills you have, by ship type even, etc... You can see this in the pilot manager section from the main FS menu.
Those records are not removed. The only way to remove them is to delete your pilot. Not by simply restarting a campaign.
You can get to admiral rank at the very beginning of the campaign, just because you reached the right score. Right after a training session, for example. This would be weird

Well, in FreeSpace 1, you got points for each objective you completed, but in FreeSpace 2, you don't.
i even edited all the missions and made just myself invulnerable and played the game on Insane all the way through and i only got a promotion to Lt. Commander.
On FreeSpace 1, i would be like a Admiral or pretty close to it. lol
So, what i did, was i edited the missions and put 100 points for every objective in each mission and in doing so gave me some points on Medium.
