A heavily automated ship could have trouble in situations that were not thought of by the programmers.

I think as time passes technology would get more and more advanced, but I don't think the general size of big ships would change very much. The bigger a ship is the more work, resources, time, and manpower it takes to build. (Not to mention the expense.) The designes surely would, and their capabilities. Everything would be tweaked more and more towards the "optimal" design. Ship crews might even increase for some ships. (Less space needed for technology means more space available for people, and in the case of carrier type ships, for pilots.)

I agree.

In you absolutely fail the first mission in which you face the Shivans, you're told in the debriefing that "over 16,000 Terrans and Vasudans perished in this engagement." Given that the GTD Carthage (an Orion-class destroyer) has a crew of 10,000, it's safe to assume that the remaining 6,000 casulties were stationed on board the GVCv Dashor, a Sobek corvette. My guess is that the Deimos would have a similarly sized crew, though I don't think it's ever mentioned for certain.

Good notice, I can remind me also a mission with TAG rockets, there is mentioned thousands are in danger on the boards of the corvette, or corvettes. So that`s right, but I presume Deimos have not so big (6000 each) crews because they do not have the fighterbays ( same Sobek) and there must be many crewmembers for the spacecraft`s service.
Let`s say it may be 5000, maybe ( I`d suppse, but only suppose) 1500. But certainly we`re talking about thousands anyway.
BTW I have just realized we know that a crew of the Hecate class consists of 10,000 but we don`t know even if Orion has bigger, or smaller crew. But I think, again, you`re right it should be about 10,000.

And probably there goes not more than 500 for a cruiser.

Edrick V, FSW: I agree. These vessels must have great crew and the computers cannot replace the people. Another thing is that there must be a lot of people on a ship which is 2 km long.

Of coure there is only one probelam: the evacuation of the crew when the ship is in danger. And we know the EPODs are never in quantity.
The guys onboard must have really great morale.

I find it quite hard to beleive the official figures for crew sizes, 10000 people on a destroyer, sure its big enough, but what would they all do?! A few hundred fighter pilots, a few hundred officers to keep everything in check, a few hundred engineers (and thats a generous guess), 40 idiots to aim the turrets (come on, it cant be hard) and about 500 cooks and support crew at most, where is this 10000 coming from? A corvete may be about as big as the Petronas Towers in malaisa or as big as the world trade center used to be, but warships arent designed to maximise office space, they have huge reactors and the like.

I don't think advances in microchip technology would allow for much bigger reactors, engines etc. Even if you half the size of your computer, it wouldnt have been that big in the first place. Computers are relativly small in relation to the rest of the warship, even these days, in 300 years they are gonna be tiny.

Overall, i think the GTVA would move towards more specialist areas, ie. assult corvetes which can take down a destroyer, carriers to replace the current role of destroyers as fleet leaders, and destroyers would move towards bigger and better beams, ie a hecate would have all Bgreens, not just one and a few Terslashes.

Well there is one point in the crews : they cannot be fully replaced. In case of the fleet there`s no rule that the newer ship, the less crew she has. it can be otherwise as well. For example, today`s strike carriers, which are pretty the same role as GTDs carry up to 6000 men on board, sometimes even more, and there are 70- 120 aircrafts on the deck.

Pretty the same was with the battleships, the newer had more people on board. Even though the technological advance decreased for example the number of the engineers. But there`s always something that should be done by people.
And don`t forget the crew is also largely used in firefighting and rescuing the ship when hit, and they can hardly be replaced.

But even though I think the crews could be smaller.
Especially I still think the corvettes can cary not more than 2000 each, and probably something around 1000.

Im thinking they'll drop the more multi purpose ships like the Fenris and Hecate in favor of ships better suited in one area: Leviathan (anti-capitalship), Aeolus (fighter/bomber suppression), Deimos (anti-capitalship), and Orion (anti-capitalship). The multi purpose ships just have some of everything but not enough of anything, making them mediocre for any task.
