Whow... I wasn't being serious folks... I know everyone uses the D-Net tools -- my comment was ment as a (bad) joke, hence the smiley.

But I give up. I've been trying to make some of the slower ships faster but I can't figure out how to do it.

Don`t give up so quickly Since no who actually knows what to do will help I`ll take a guess at it.
Try increasing the values of these two strings $Max Oclk Speed: and +Aburn Max Vel: in the ships table for the ship you`re intrested in.
I think that would do what you want.

Well I just MOd my ships.tbl NOW so I could say something about it...
You can MOD ships.tbl with wordPad (if you don`t have VP View f.e.) and the best way is to save the ships.tbl before and then make one try after another. Most of the $s are described in the file, so you can do it, sooner or later.
FS2 should work properly when you change the values unless you don`t touch ships name and some things like exchanging .pof which serves as the model of the ship (once tried and the effect was poor).
My first change was quite little one, I gave GTD Hecate max speed 20m/s ( I think new class of ships should be faster as Orions, which are 30 years older construction!) and increased the Hit POints and game worked with no problem.

Ok, here's my next dumb question....
How do I edit a ship's .tbl file. I've extracted the GTF Myrmidon but all I'm able to do is view it through MODELVIEW32. I tried opening the same file in Wordpad, but I couldn't find the strings for max speed or afterburner velocity.

I agree.
But I think the Orion class ships need more anti-fighter weaponry.

I agree.

I sense much confusion here so I`ll start from the start.
VPView is a program for extracting files from the .vp files you don`t actually need it for modding but if you don't have it you`ll need to get hold of the files from someone else who does.
If all you want to do is edit the ships table you can get hold of a copy from my FAQ but if you really want to do any kind of serious editing of weapons etc you will need to get hold of a copy of VPView. You can find links and help with VPView in my FAQ.
Once you have a copy of ships.tbl you can edit it using any text editor. Since it comes free with windows most people use wordpad.
Once you have edited the ships table to your hearts content you must save it in the freespace2\data\tables\
Mikegene I don`t think you`ve actually got the table file. What you`ve actually extracted is the .pof file. This is the file that contains all the 3D data for the ship. What you`re actually after is a ~380k file called ships.tbl which can be found in the tables section of root_fs2.vp (use vpview to extract it or get it from the link below)
Hopefully that will be simple enough to follow.

BTW: if you can`t find the ships.tbl in Data/Tables ( as in my case: all files are hidden) you can for example download a ship which has also a version of ships.tbl. Then it should work. You can place the file also in main catalogue ( not Data, simply Freespace 2).
MIkegene: I agree, Orion is quite vulnerable to fighters. That`s one of the reasons I like Hecate class.
And when I use Orions, I use them with an escort of Aeolus or Deimos. OR simply lone fighter wing.

That was the bit of info that I was needing, but didn't know it.
After reading your post I started playing around with the Myrmidon's attributes. It now has a top speed of 300, & does 500 with the afterburner engaged. It also does 100 in reverse. LOL
