Hey Daveb, since the VBB is closing, why don't you stay here? I for one would be honored to have a member of Volition here.

I wouldn't blame THQ for the closing of the VBB per se. Its been a long time coming. We just don't have the time and can't afford the effort it takes to run and moderate it the way it should be. By the time THQ took the board over, it was a lost cause. We get the same benefit by visiting a 3rd party board (like this one) and the community gets the same benefit. Except now we have the advantage of not having to worry about some fool posting pr0n links or something.

That corporate cog thing is total baloney. Lemme list the # of things that have changed drastically since THQ bought us:
- we get donuts on Thursdays in addition to the usual bagels on Wednesday.
- we can hit up various THQ people for WWF tickets.
That's about it. Volition calls the shots on projects as much as it ever has. _And_ we have the added advantage of not having to live from milestone to milestone. THQ has deep pockets and is more than willing to spend it on us to make _us_ happy. Aside from growing larger (something we were doing anyway), Volition culture hasn't changed a whit. You won't find a single employee in Volition who's been here before/after who's going to tell you things aren't WAY better off now than before. We've sold far more games, seen far more bonuses and have more flexibility now than ever, since THQ says to us "what would be the cool thing to do?". All the bellyaching and doomsaying on the VBB to the contrary is baseless.

What kind of donuts? Are they the creme filled? Those are my favorate. And you get it free right? Man, you guys are lucky.
Anyway, I cant really blame THQ about the VBB issue. Its more of a free-lance board than a Volition board.

I don't want to argue with you about it. But, it is no secret that Red Faction was released before it was ready. The support of the current games is pathetic.
you know what, I'm not going to say anything more because I'm sure you have heard it all already.
Empty promises.
but hey, got to love those donuts!

I'm not upset about the VBB closing. I've said it over and over it should just be closed. However the lack of support, and the general "let's work on something else before fixing the games that are out" mentality is what I do have a problem with.

What it all comes down to is that you're all just jealous of the free donuts.

Ok, I know i'll be flamed for that, but, would you, as Chris Roberts said about Wing Commander, " work again on Freespace, given the oportunity to do so?"

Absolutely. In fact, you'd be surprised how many times you'll hear this conversation (or some variant) come up at lunch :
"Man, it would be really cool to work on FS3"
"Yeah, no kidding. We could do X, Y, Z, W, ......"
Almost everyone who worked on FS1/2 is still here and a good % of them had FS1/2 as their first project ever. I'd choose working on FS3 over almost any other project that might come up, but I'd insist that it be a PC project

dave, I've been meaning to say this for a long time... I have the highest respect for you and Volition. For someone that gets bored with a game after a few days, I've been attached to Freespace since I bought it early in 2000. Even with Descent, and RF, I never am able to stop playing them.
You all there have an incredible imagination and created an incredible space sim and universe in which a great community was made from. Even now, 3 years after it's release, FS2 still amazes me.
I want to say I'm sorry for all the spats we've had in the past, a lot of times I was way out of bounds and was completely unfair to you and Volition.
thanks for everything.
*whew*
got that off my chest...

Daveb,
You say nothing has changed for the worse at Volition since THQ took over, but from a customer view things have indeed changed.
During the Freespace days we customers were used to good support, dudes from Volition often visited the VBB and things that needed patching was patched. This created (a small but) fanatic fanbase, not only devoted to Freespace but loyal to Volition.
With Red Faction it has not been so, it was buggy when released, it took forever before the mod-bug that allowed easy cheating in MP was adressed (not until the NERV-cland had designed a anticheat-mod). The worst thing is the lack of info from Volition on these and other problems people have posted about on the VBB. Like you were ignoring your customers. It didnt use to be that way.
In contrast to the old freespace gamers that grew to love Volition, the new Red Faction gamers despise the company. The closing of the VBB has only added to this. Sorry if I'm blunt, but thats how it is.
This post is not intended as flame, I'm sorry if have upset anyone. Goodluck on your new projects Volition-dudes.
Fafner
