Brando's statements about AMD - INTEL is correct.
I'm system builder and can compare the performance of PCs every day (can is wrong - have to is correct ).

If you wanna get a fast comp you only can reach this by sorting out available components - not by buying a DELL thingy!

Today the CPU itself is more than fast enough! You have to supply it with sufficient data, that means:
- fast DDRRam on VIA 266A/333 Chip
- if ever possible a RAID-Controller with 2 HDDs, of course 7200 RPM and 2 M Cache each (You have to notice that the HDDS are the slowest component you HAVE to work with!)
- if you wanna play 3D you mustn't ignore NVIDIA and ATI Radeon- chips (in the mom we have the prob that prices for Geforce 4 TI chips didn't fall - nor did those for Geforce 3 TI 500 or Radeon 8500.. )

And BTW a P4 1800, built with RAMBUS (PC800) RAM nearly has the performance of an AMD 1200, built the INTEL with SDRAM and you will be thrown back to the "speed" of Celeron BS - then it would be easier for you to just burn the bucks!

I'm sitting here at my Athlon XP 1900, 512 DDR CL2, ABIT KR7A Raid 133+ MainBoard, 2x IBM 40 GB IC35, Geforce2 GTS 64 DDR, 32x Mitsumi CDRW, WIN XP PRo....and do you know what? This comp doesn't make fun anymore! It's always ready for input - and even a 100 MB file is saved in 1 second and there'S no reason to wait for anything - even if I was doing my backup to the CDRW and printing high resolution graphics at the same time..and changing the CPU to 1600 or 2000 MHz wouldn't make that difference in performance! The high data-transfer is garanteed - -that's it!

RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives...

Honestly, RAID striping doesn't net you much performance unless you consistently use large files. Video editing can really do a lot with RAID stripe, but for most use...not really.

RAID means (at least) when striping 2 HDDs that the data transfer HDD <-> Mainboard is the double. So the HDD is the slowest component when working and the speed of CPU/RAM/Video has gone up extremely but not the speed of the HDDs in the same kind (because they are still mechanical!), EVERY increasing of the HDD-speed means a direct increasing of the whole system! And NO system can work faster than it's slowest component. And this is current for EVERY data-transfer to/from HDD - doesn't matter how large the file is .

To get a lot of edu about Raids: http://www.raid.com/04_01_00.html

prices: the difference in the same Mainboard with/without an integrated Raid-controller (ASUS, ABIT, A-OPEN, EPOX, FIC..) either from HIGHPOINT or PROMISE is about 20 € (17,5 US) . the more bucks you need are for the 2nd (3rd ? ) HDD...

Most of my customers are buying a board with Raid and in the 1st only 1 HDD, but to have the option of adding a 2nd HDD later. To build a comp in expectation of future possibilities isn't easy, but this is one chance!

IMHO good and not expensive: A-OPEN AK77 plus A 333, EPOX 8Ka3, FIC AN 11 Raid. The top of the pop: ABIT KR7A Raid..all are equiped with either VIA KT 266A or 333 and Promise or Highpoint Raid.

so, now I'm out of ammo for this mom and here

RAID's a lot more flexible than just 2 drives acting as one large one (RAID striping, or RAID1) ... there's RAID0 (Mirroring), RAID5 (mirroring, striping, and bit-checking) ... read that link. It'll tell you everything you need to know about RAID drives.

And like I said, unless you move or edit very large files, RAID striping probably won't get you THAT much performance. ATA/133 is pretty damn fast.

As for built-in RAID controllers, avoid Highpoint if you can. They tend to suck. Promise (and I'll be getting a PCI Promise RAID card sooner or later) is the winner.
